Success after IF

Vent: I'm worried I'm coming down with Strep Throat

So my paralegal's husband had strep throat last week.  No big deal. I don't work with him.  On Tuesday, my paralegal brought her 3.5 year old daughter to work. Again, normally not a big deal. She "claimed" that her daughter was just being whiny and didn't want to go to daycare.  However, she knows I am a germ-a-phobe so I suspected that she was underexagerating her daughter's condition so I would not be like "WTH?"  Plus, the child slept most of the day.  I never even heard a peep out of her.  I suspected at the time that her kid was sick (and so she could not take her to daycare), but didn't want to use her vacation/sick day to stay home with her.  I avoided both of them like the plague, but our office is small.

I was not in the office yesterday so I don't know if she brought her with her or not.  Well, today, I have started feeling worse and worse and my throat is killing me. Sure enough, my paralegal called in and said her daughter had strep throat.  She asked if she should come in to work and bring her sick kid or stay home. My boss was like, "Stay home!!!! We don't all want to get sick!"

Ugh.  I am seriously worried I am coming down with it.  Even more concerning, I really don't want LO to get it.  I am going to avoid him and hope I have not given it to him already.  :(

I really wish sick people would just stay home when they are sick...or when their kids are sick.  LO is only in the 3rd percentile for weight and can't take breast milk so he has no immune system and an illness could put him in the hospital. This is why we pay for a nanny instead of putting him in daycare. Plus, we have sucky insurance with a $5k deductible so if he does end up in the hospital or ER, we are coming out of pocket for it. Ugh. I just don't understand why people can't stay home when they or their kids are sick!!!  It is not like we even have anything that important going on right now at work. :(

  • FX that you aren't coming down with it and both you and your LO stay healthy. People are just so inconsiderate when it comes to exposing others to their illnesses sometimes.

    THIS!

When I was teaching nothing would annoy me more than the parents who would drop their kid off at school with a 104 degree temp, leaving them to barf all over my floor or expose us all to their barking cough.  Ah yeah, you can just turn right around and come pick up little Joey ...

I almost lost a friend last year after I asked her to please not bring her son who had gotten the chicken pox from the vaccine to DD's 1st birthday party.  Not only had she not been vaccinated for it yet, but there were going to be a few others there who hadn't had the shot yet either AND I was 25 weeks pregnant at the time.  I had the pox as a kid, but I sure as hell didn't want to get shingles or something while pregnant.  She couldn't figure out why I didn't want him there and told me the doctor said he could only give it to other kids if they touched him.  Yeah, because 1 year old kids would never touch each other?!?!

    Ridiculous.

Having a sick LO is the worst (especially when you don't feel well either!).  I hope you guys escape it.

  • Hoping you guys don't get sick. FWIW, babies tend not to get strep. My son had strep when I had Maren so I was worried since she was only a day old. We washed hands more often but unfortunately there's only so much you can do.

As for people coming to work sick, I sort of understand it. I've got four kids and they are all pretty healthy but even with normal illnesses I'd be taking off weeks every year. I don't get that much sick leave and even if I did taking off that much time would be frowned upon. I would never bring my sick child to work though, that is strange. I have childcare I can use when my kids are sick but that can be hard to find.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Thanks for all the supportive posts!  I am feeling a little better today, but still feel a little under the weather so I am hoping I just have a cold or really bad allergies and not strep.  And LO is doing fine.
