Glasses for a 2.5 year old

Anyone else deal with this?

Yesterday was day one and it was 2.5 hours of battling (we got them in the evening).

I don't want to bribe her and they aren't so magical that her vision is amazing with them on to just keep on.  I assume it will be a battle for a few weeks/months until she finally gives in and wears them.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Re: Glasses for a 2.5 year old

  • No advice just sympathy....I had to have my eye patched and wear glasses at a young age and just about drove my mom crazy trying to keep them on me....My older sister used to be the watch dog so I would take them off to watch tv and she would tell me when my mom was coming :) I'm sure I will have to pay for that in some way with my kids haha

If I was in your case I might see bribery as a viable option....or maybe try putting a timer on....kids seem to like timers for some reason....if she keeps them on for "x" amount of time she gets a sticker!

  • I would first find out why she doesn't like them. If anything ease her into them with small periods of use during the times she really needs them and give her little rewards like a sticker for not taking them off. My cousin has worn glasses since around that age and his first thing was no one in his play group or family wore them so my aunt bought dollar store glasses for all the adults to wear and popped out the lenses. Then when he said they were hurting him she eased him in and took the back strap off the slowly eased it back on so they would fall off and break while playing. It took time but eventually he didn't realize he was wearing them and tried to swim with them.
  • One of my girls started wearing glasses 3 months ago.  We did not have to battle over wearing them, because I think they do help her see much better.  The first two weeks, if she took them off, we said "ok, you can take a break and we'll put them on again later."  20-30 minutes later (or longer)  we would put them back on and she was fine.   After those first few weeks, she stopped taking them off and telling us that she needed a break.

Our pediatric ophthalmologist told us that he was happy with her wearing them 80% of the time, and she would be an absolute angel if she was okay wearing them 100% of the time.  Shockingly, she wears them all the time.   Good luck!
