How important are they to the baby? I know everyone strongly suggests them but in the first few months of my pregnancy I wasn't able to take them and that was when they were most crucial, so will it make a difference if I don't take them now? I try to get as many of the vitamins as I can in my daily foods.
Any other moms not take them and their babies be just fine?

I doubt your baby is going to come out missing an arm because you didn't take prenatals, but I, as a non-expert, would still recommend them. They're good for YOU, as well as baby (since the baby is sucking you dry of nutrients right now).

The reason why pre-natal vitamins are so essential in the first couple weeks of pregnancy is because this is when the neural tube is forming (I know it seems early). The neural tube is what becomes the brain and spine, and if you do not take in enough folate (aka folic acid), the neural tube may not form properly leading to birth defects like spina bifida. Although not essential during the first few weeks, most women choose, and most doctors recommend, you take prenatals to make sure you get 400 micrograms of folate a day. You could also do this by eating food high in folate, but with a prenatal you don't need to think about what foods and how much you eat so much, and you can know you have your bases covered.
Later in pregnancy when the neural tube has already formed folate is still important but less crucial. If you are eating a healthy balanced diet you may already be getting all the nutrients you and your baby need. But you can think of prenatals kind of like nutrients insurance; they have your back and can fill in the gaps in your diet if there are any, so they can still be a help (if not give you peace of mind).

This. I have a very dear friend who's family adopted a boy when he was a baby who has spina bifida. He developed this because his real mother didn't take care of herself during pregnancy and doctors told her it was from the lack of pre-natals and folic acid during the first trimester. Even if you started late, I would take them!!
