Helmet MoM's please come in- sorry, long.

So I'm feeling a little frustrated and I'm interested to hear if I need to chill out, raise a stink or if this is just par for the course. My boys got their helmets Friday and are doing great in them. It's like they don't even know they're on. We started by meticulously following their "on, off" schedule for the first few days leading up to 23/7. On Monday  (after their first full night in them), I noticed my little guy had a welt on his head. Almost looked like he hit it in the corner of something. So I kept the helmet off til it went down. I put it back on later and when I took it off for his bath, noticed there was now a blister. Clearly I wasn't going to put it back on him again and I felt terrible, so I left it off and the next morning the red spot was still there but the blister had popped. I emailed the girl on Monday and talked with her throughout the day and she said to bring him back in tues if it wasn't better. When we went in, sure enough he had a growth spirt so she shaved it down and said to start alternating on off again til it heals. Fast forward to today, poor dude still looks like he was hit on the head with a frying pan. Big red welt on his forehead. And now my other guy has a red spot across the back of his head on his hair line. So now I have to go back again tomorrow to have them both looked at. She verified that both are not "normal" red spots.

I expressed  my concern to her and asked if I should just keep it off completely until they heal (I don't see how it's going to get better if I keep putting something hot and restrictive over an already sore spot), but she explained that they can out grow them if I leave them off completely. Clearly I don't want that to happen either, I've paid $3k for these things and want them to work. I'm just really frustrated and I guess disappointed. No one told us that this could happen in the beginning. This will be my 3rd time there in a week and the place is 35 minutes away. And most importantly, I feel awful for my babies. I don't think they seem bothered by any of it, but I can't imagine it's fun and painless. Has anyone had any similar experiences and did it work out? At this rate, I'm feeling like ill never have them in them full time and I'm starting to panic that this is going to go in forever. TIA.

  • I don't think it's normal but not necessarily abnormal either. The breaking in period can be rough for some. What type of helmet do they have? My son didn't wear the helmet a whole lot the first week but we've had no issue since.

  • Hmmm I know we had some red spots but they told us if they don't go away in 15 (I think) minutes or so, then call to get an adjustment. We had a style called CranioCap. I think it's exclusive to the clinic we went to here - Children's, so I might not be able to help with your specific type. I've seen all kinds and ours were very minimalist and light. Anyway, I guess I don't have much advice but to keep being observant and know that there is an adjustment period. We had our share of red spots each time we got an adjustment but over time they went away.

  • Thanks gals. We went back (again) this morning and she made some more adjustments. I'm REALLY hoping this holds us now to our 2 week follow up. All the back and forth has been a lot on these poor guys. And I hate seeing their skin hurting :(. I was just really curious to see if this was par for the course or if maybe the clinic was doing something wrong with measurements etc. it seemed like a lot more than just the usual adjustment period. Here's hoping we are good from here!
