Has anyone ever used an unexpired carseat from a good friend you know very well? A friend is offering me her convertible seat for my husbands car as I bought a new one for mine and I'm wondering if this is a good idea.
If you trust your friend and know that it hasn't been In a crash then its fine. Make sure you check the manufacture date to find out when it will expire and also make sure that if she ever cleaned the seat that the straps were not soaked in water which can weaken the straps.

This. We sold our infant seat to a good friend of ours and then we lent it back for DS and now they have it for #2 arriving in May. All of this well within the 5 year expiration date.

Add no accidents and never gate checked on a plane.
As long as it has not been in an accident, not been checked/gate checked on a plane and not had the straps submerged or cleaned with harsh cleansers (nothing stronger than mild dish soap) you're good! If the straps have been cleaned or submerged you can probably order a new harness for next to nothing (I know for my snugride it was going to be $12) and then you're good!
When you gate check a car seat, it gets tossed around and could have hidden cracks and other damage. It's basically like the seat being in a car accident. The safest thing to do when traveling is to pay for a seat for your LO and have them ride in the seat on the plane.
This is good to know as I am debating driving or flying to NYC this summer.
What are your plans in NYC? I lived there for 5 years with kids and it was very easy to just use public transit the entire time, so that way you don't need to worry about a carseat. All of the airports are connected to the city via public transit and honestly it's far easier to get around town via subway than sitting in traffic.

Is it not good to gate check a car seat? I see it done fairly frequently. Not sure how else you would travel?
Just curious

Another reason to buy your baby a seat on the plane.
