Food for nanny

How do you handle food for your nanny?  Do you ask her what she likes and make sure to keep the fridge stocked?  Or does she go out and shop for what she likes and bring it to the house?  She is part-time live in, so we are covering her food costs while she is in the house.

Re: Food for nanny

  • When I babysat over the summer (I'm a teacher.)  I would just help myself.  If the kids were eating mac & cheese I would too.  If there was something I could microwave or a quick salad I'd eat that.  It would be nice to have some things on hand so she doesn't have to spend time cooking but think about it as a job...you probably bring your lunch to work.

  • I always asked our au pair to put things she wanted/needed on the shopping list.

  • I told her to help herself.  She usually brought her own lunch, but if I noticed she liked something I stocked up on it for her.  I just wanted to keep her happy so that she'd show up every day and do a good job.
  • I tell her to eat what she wants. ?She sometimes brings her own food anyway. I watch what she brings, and try to stock up on that.

  • I do both since sometimes I don;t make it to the store to buy what she likes If I know the pantry is looking bare I give her $20 bucks so she can get get stuff for herself. I live in the NYC area so when she takes DS for a walk she can stop at the supermarket.
