Somethings wrong

Something is wrong with C, I can feel it. I noticed on Monday that he was crankier than normal and by Monday night he had started screaming(not just crying) and arching his back from 7pm-10:45 when he finally passed out. He seemed better Tuesday morning but was doing it again in the afternoon so I called the pedi. They saw him and said everything looked fine but we could up his reflux meds and try glycerin suppositories in case he was consipated(he had not pooped since Saturday morning).

We upped his reflux meds starting Tuesday night and finally found the suppositories yesterday. He pooped after we gave it to him and seemed a little better yesterday evening DH said. Then he woke up at 3am to eat and it took me an hour to get him to go back down because he wouldn't stop crying. Then this morning he is back to crying and arching his back again. He isn't eating well either because he gets uncomfortable and will start crying.

I have tried everything I can think of gas drops, gripe water, tummy massage, teething rings and nothing is helping. I have another call into the pediatrician right now but I know when I take him in they will tell me everything looks fine. I just am at a loss of what to do and that feels horrible.

Re: Somethings wrong

  • Oh hunterjumper, I'm so sorry to hear that C isn't feeling well.  I hope you can get some answers soon.

I'd say that, M has been suffering from something similar (but a much lesser degree) for the past week.  Every other night (so 3 nights so far in past week), he woke up 1 hour after his MOTN feedings.  We thought it was gas, but despite burping and passing gas, M continued to cry (not screaming though).  His cries sounded like he was discomfort, and he was continually wriggling and kicking his legs.  Each time, it took us between 1hr to 2 hrs to console him.  We tried gas drops, gripe water, tummy massage, bicycling his legs, nursing etc.  Nothing really helped and I think M eventually calmed down b/c he was so exhausted.  The only weird thing is that he doesn't do that during the day.. he is his normal happy (and occasionally fussy) self.

  • DD had a lot of trouble with gas until she was about 5 or 6 months, and used to scream and arch her back like that, she wouldn't stop until she passed the gas.  If he's been constipated, he might have a buildup of gas too.

Are you BFing?  If so, have you eaten anything different or taken any meds that could be causing him extra gas?

If on formula, have you changed the type you're using recently or changed nipple sizes on his bottles?

That's the only thing I can think of.

  • Both of mine had a lot of problems w/ gas and both also had reflux.  Ditto pp, if you are ff - try switching.  We ended up using similac w/ the rice starch for both and they were able to come off the reflux meds.  GL!

  • I am sorry you are going through this.  We went through tons of phases like that with C.  I think it was a combo of gas, constipation and just general fussiness.  I had to call the pedi several times on weekends because it had been over 7 days since he had pooped.  When it got really bad we gave grape or apple juice mixed with water to help loosen things.  As soon as he pooped we'd get a few day of it being better, then back to square one.  I was *this close* to asking for a referral to a GI multiple times, and maybe I should have, but it did get better with time and C is fine now.

  • Instead of reflux, could he have a milk protein intolerance/allergy?

My LO exhibited alot of signs like that until we switched him (at pedi's recommendation) to Alimentum at 2 months. He was also put on prevacid.  I honestly did not think he *really* had a milk protein issue (thought it was just acid reflux) so at about 4 months I tried introducing just a single bottle of breast milk per day back into his diet again.  We went right back to the same old symptoms even from just the one bottle per day.  I took out the onr bottle per day of BM and all was well again.

  • Oh that sounds frustrating.  Sorry :(

Right now my DD has had diarrhea on and off for the last week and a fever for the last two days and has only been drinking Gatorade (per the pedi) and not eating food.  I don't know what the heck is going on with her either.  I feel your pain right now.

Hang in there.  Hopefully they'll get it figured out soon.

  • I'm sorry poor C is having such a rough time. It sounds an awful lot like reflux to me. Is he spitting up? Does he have milk come out of his nose? Does he sound like he's congested, but not have a cold?  Those were E's symptoms.  We also found that putting her on her tummy helped her expel gas, if you think gas might be the issue.  It's so hard when LO is uncomfortable and you don't know why.  GL, I hope he starts feeling better soon.

  • I'm sorry, that sounds awful!

Have you tried pushing baby's knees up to his chest, repeatedly, to help try to alleviate the gas? That helped some with our babies, but neither of them were really that gassy anyway. I hope you all get some relief soon.

  • Ditto was other people think sounds like it could be unresolved reflux. Is your lo on zantac or a PPI? For some kids, zantac just doesn't work as well as a PPI. When we switched Dexter to a PPI, he was so much better!

  • C is on Prilosec and they upped his dosage when we were there on Tuesday and it hasn't seemed to help.  I am BF and have known I can't have dairy without it giving him gas so I tried switching to soy milk on Sunday.  It didn't click until later today while I was doing some research that the soy milk might be the culprit.  The pedi didn't have anything else to recommend to me today other than to see if the new dosage of reflux medicine works.

I think I am going to ask if they can test him for a milk/soy protein intolerance and of course stop drinking the soy milk and see if that works.  I just hope that is what it is and will make him feel better.  I hate seeing him so uncomfortable.

  • I am so sorry your LO isn't feeling well. I know how desperate you begin to feel when you just want to fix whatever is wrong. Has he always been on Prilosec? Maybe trying Zantac instead might help with the reflux, and a hypoallergenic formula should help with any food allergies if needed. They can be really expensive, but some are actually covered by insurance. Good luck mama. I hope he gets some relief soon.

  • So I was thinking about you tonight ...

One of my friends had a horrible time with reflux with her little guy.  I told her about your post and she told me to tell you that she thinks he's over eating.  She said only allow him to nurse on one side per feed and said that you could call her if you wanted to and she could give you more info (LOL ... I was like, ummmm I don't think she's going to call you, but ... ha).  I know she struggled with this for MONTHS (her little guy just turned a year and they continue to battle the reflux from time to time).  It was really hard on the family but she was dedicated to nursing and somehow they got/are getting through it.  Anyway, if you would want to contact her even on Facebook or something, let me know and I'll send you the link to her FB page.

Have you tried probiotics?  My second daughter had colic and probiotics were heaven sent.  I would highly recommend them.  My pedi gave me a free sample of Bio Gaia but when it ran out I bought a powder kind found in the refrigerated section at The Vitamin Cottage.  It's for infants and children.  I think it was the Nature's Way brand.  hth.

eta: Probiotics are supposed to help with tummy issues.  Not sure if they will help with reflux.  Can't hurt to ask your pedi about it.
