My doctor has suggested I take a Norethindrone product as birth control. I am currently pumping and developing my supply for my little man who was born 6 weeks ago at 27 weeks. I'm concerned about the effects on breast milk. My doc says it will be fine but everything I read warns about the meds being transferred through breast milk. Anyone have experience with this type of BC?

Re: BC and pumping for preemie???
PROBABLY SAFE. Norethindrone is a typical synthetic progestational agent that is used for oral contraception. It is believed to be secreted into breastmilk in small amounts. It produces a dosedependent suppression of lactation at higher doses, although somewhat minimal at lower doses. This product is generally considered ideal for breastfeeding mothers. But some mothers still are quite sensitive to progestins and may suffer a loss of milk synthesis. Always warn mothers that any kind of birth control pill may suppress their milk supply, be they progestinonly, and certainly estrogencontraining products. It is advisable to wait as long as possible, preferably 46 weeks postpartum prior to instituting therapy with progesterone to avoid reducing the milk supply.
