Latching--so frustrated

We are getting over a case of thrush which completely ruined DS's latch. I cannot for the life of me get him to open his mouth. It is seriously at least a 5 minute battle every time. (and by that point, I'm definitely spraying milk everywhere). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to re-teach him to latch? (he's 3 weeks old.) I am not one to quit, but this is seriously exhausting, especially in the middle of the night. :(

  • We're dealing with thrush too, so I feel your pain.  Have you tried laid back nursing or side lying nursing?  I have found that if I let LO latch on her own, she does better than trying to force a latch.  She finds it with her lips and just sucks it in.

  • Try just putting him to the breast keep your hands out of it. When the milk starts to leak, rub his lips on the nipple, and see if he does it himself. It's not foolproof, but it's something to try. :
