potty training outings

Ok I'm on day 3 of potty training and my son is getting it!! But he still wont say I've got to pee or poop. He usually just runs to the potty.
But my problem is that we've been just letting him go free bird with a tshirt on but I've got to go grocery shopping tomorrow and dh can't watch him BC he's working all weekend. I just don't know how to or how to approach outings. Should I use pull ups, diaper, underwear...I realize I'm going to be constantly asking him if he needs to pee or poop. And taking him to the bathroom at every place.
Just any suggestions would be great!!

Re: potty training outings

  • I waited a week before going out to be honest, but I live in south florida and we can go outside all the time.

We got the potette plus and it works out great for outings.  I also brought extra clothes.

I would try not to go out until he gets the hang of it a few days.

  • Have him use the bathroom before leaving the house, find a bathroom at the store when you get there, and have him go again as soon as you get home. Bring a change of clothes and don't make a big deal if he has an accident.
Or just stick him in a diaper or pullup. To me they're both the same.

Great!! I plan on doing just that. I dont want to take him out and about but I've got to go grocery shopping. DH was supposed to watch him but has to work and tomorrow is the only day its not supposed to rain.

  • I just used pullups when we went out in those early days, and still asked her if she had to go or not. It didn't deter dd's potty training at all - I just stopped using pullups when we went out once I knew I could trust her a bit more with telling me she had to go & being able to hold long enough (after a few weeks of training)
  • I put pullups on her for outings for the first couple weeks.

  • Have you been using diapers still? With DD we "threw out" all her diapers that first day. She only wore pullups at night after 2 days of her peeing the bed and not waking (just sleeping in her pee).

We didn't leave the house until day 5 when she actually said "I have to go potty". We also kept her in panties so she knew she couldn't pee in them.

Maybe today I'd have him wear underwear so that he knows he can't pee in them.

Our first outing was to Costco and I took her to the bathroom right when we got there and when we were leaving (she didn't go). Five minutes from home and she said she had to go pee. She made it home and went in the potty.

You just have to do it. And I recommend not putting him in a diaper or you'll just confuse him.
