Speaking of SIDs (suffocation, whatever): Tummy sleepers

We just quit swaddling cold turkey last night.  (He always slept swaddled, on his back.)  Every time DS has fallen asleep since then, he has rolled onto his tummy and slept with his face planted into the mattress.

This would bother me, except I read the rather alarmist Baby 411, and they scared the crap out of my by citing studies that show that babies who usually sleep on their backs who end up on their tummies are at a 20% greater risk (or whatever) for SIDS than babies who are used to sleeping on their tummies.

Make me feel better.  I couldn't sleep last night.  I kept getting up to move his head.

  • I co sleep and DS sleeps better on his tummy so I am a bad tummy sleeping mommy.

  • We quite cold turkey this past weekend (swaddling that is) and now I put DS on his side or tummy.  He's old enough (and I think your DS is to) to lift his head and turn it with out any problems.  But it never hurts to check on him (I do this a lot anyway!)

  • try not to stress!  if he knows how to flip from one side to the other, then he will if need be!  get the angel care monitor if you want to help you feel better!
  • dd sleeps on her belly. I have ever only noticed her face planted once. She did eventually move it. Of course I watched her the whole time until she did. I wanted to see of she would and to make sure she didn't have a problem.?

DD is able to roll over so it's not like i can stop her now. ?I say watch him sleep. Look to see if his nose is actually obstructed. It might not be.?

  • I am also a bad mom of a tummy sleeper.  I'd recommend getting the AngelCare monitor if it would put your mind at ease.

  • I would never put DD on her tummy to sleep, but if she gets herself into that position on her own, then she's probably okay to stay like that.
  • I'm the Mom of a tummy sleeper (since week 3). Ever since I got the Angelcare Monitor, I sleep so much better and can actually get things done during his naps. I know it won't prevent SIDS, but it will at least alarm me if he ever did stop breathing and I could scare him back into breathing or get help immediately.
  • i'm not convinced that tummy sleeping causes SIDS, anyway. i don't really have a problem with tummy sleeping, and you can't really prevent them from rolling over on their own. Try not to stress.
  • I've heard that if you are putting them to sleep on their backs and they roll onto their stomach themselves that they probably going to be ok.
  • I just want to bring this up and I can't remember where i read it (I know this probably doesn't confirm my comment very well) but one of the reasons they point to tummy sleeping as a risk factor for sids is because babies fall into a deeper kind of sleep and it's harder for them to wake up or breath.  Tummy sleeping totally freaks me out and luckily DS has shown no interest in being on his tummy.  The theory makes sense to me, but to other people it might sound crazy, but I do think that babies can fall into such a deep slumber on their stomachs that they can't be awake enough to breath.

  • I am a mommy of a tummy sleeper.  As long as DC can turn his/her head both ways and roll over on their own, I think it is OK.

  • that is why we stopped swaddling at 4 mo bc pedi said no swaddling once she can roll.  she can only roll from her tummy to her back though so she doesn't find herself on her belly but if she did she could get over if she needed to, but not if her arms are pinned down
