s/o Pumping and Travel

The post about pumping at Wrigley Field made me think of two things.

1. It is almost baseball season, and that makes me incredibly happy.

2. I'm going to have to start traveling for work again soon, and I don't know what I'm going to do with my boob juice.

I travel anywhere from 25-50% of the time for work, sometimes overnight.  I would hate to pump and dump just because I'm away from home, but I'm not sure how I would be able to transport the milk in the event I have to fly.

Does anyone else travel for work?  Any ideas?

  • I've had a number of friends who have saved it in bags and flown with it. TSA has been fine with it. They just explain it's boob juice and somehow medical and get past the 3 oz rule.

  • Yep. Breastmilk is ok to fly with.

  • Awesome.  I had asked one of my airline clients, and she was pretty sure it had to be checked.

Do you fly with it in a cooler and icepacks?

You can take non frozen milk through security - it takes a few extra minutes at screening, but NBD. Just let them know before you send your stuff through the machine. Also, you can take FROZEN things (e.g., ice packs). Again. Just let them know ahead of time. And whatever hotel you're staying at, just let them know that you need freezer access. Because some of them charge if you move the things in the mini bar.

Well, luckily, due to the nature of what I do, I get access to employee areas of the hotel.  Since that's where I'm working and all.  I can imagine it could be a pain to have to get into the freezers otherwise, though.

  • I just flew with BM and let the TSA know as my bag was going through the xray machine. I had a newborn in my arms though so clearly they knew it wasn't any funny business... and they just nodded and said thanks. NBD. I'm sure it will be the same even if you don't have your LO with you... even if it takes a couple extra minutes at screening it'll be worth it rather than dumping everything!

Oh and. Here. The rules apply the same whether or not the kid is with you.

Thanks.  I'm going to print it out and bring it, just in case.  Some small-market airports don't seem to be well versed in the rules.

  • I don't travel for work but I have flown with BM and its pretty easy, you can either check it if you feel comfortable and its properly stored in a cooler or such or you can carry it on, BM is allowed through security, if you bring an ice pack you just have to make sure it is completely frozen, or you can use ice dump it going through security and fill it up on the other side.

I'm with you...no dumping, BM is wayyyy to precious to me, save it any way possible! Since you travel for such a short time at a time you should be able to easily store and save!
