Success after IF

First night away

So MH has a company party Saturday.  My parents are coming in to watch LO, and we're going to go to the party downtown and stay in a very fancy hotel afterwards.  This is going to double as our Valentine's Day too.  I am very excited (especially about the prospect of STTN!)  But I am also so nervous!  I know E will be fine with her grandmommy.  But I don't know if I will be!  I will miss her so much, and worry the whole time.  How old was your LO when they spent their first night away from you?  How did it go?  Any tips?
TTC with PCOS since November 2009

Re: First night away

  • How fun!  It will be a lot harder for you than it will be for E.  I would just check in with your mom when you need to & that will ease your mind.  It is good for you & your DH to get a break.  No other advice, my family is all overseas & we haven't found someone we feel comfortable leaving LO's with overnight, if I had the chance I would take it & enjoy every minute :) Have fun TJ, you deserve it!

  • I just went through this for the first time a few weeks ago with Barrett. He was 5 months old and he stayed with DH's parents. My advice would be to try and reassure yourself that he is in the most capable hands and keep your phone close by so you can text and check in for your own piece of mind. I think the build up the days before you do it are worse than when you actually drop them off. GLand enjoy yourself!

  • We left DD for our first night away when she was 7 months old. We went to a wedding that DH was in and stayed the night at the hotel where the wedding was. The hardest part for me was the initial leaving the house goodbye moment. DD was fine, we had a blast and I guarantee you she did too! You have nothing to worry about and you know DD will be in good hands! Luckily grandparents take care of our LO's as if they were their own! Enjoy your night away and definitely sleep in the next morning! Order room service for breakfast and take a nice long shower before you head home.

  • My first night away was for a work thing.  Adalyn stayed home with DH, it was just an overnight trip, and it wasn't that bad.  I enjoyed staying in the nice hotel room, watching TV, and getting a full night's sleep!

Don't get me wrong, I called DH a couple of times, and did some video chat as well.  And it was great when I came home the next afternoon--definitely got my snuggles in. Smile

Have fun! Maybe your parents can text you some pics of her throughout the evening?

  • Our first night(s) away from baby girl was when we were in the hospital having baby boy.  I'm pretty certain she didn't even notice us being gone.  She was happy as a clam when visiting us in the hospital BUT when we came to get her on our way home from the hospital she was kinda stand offish to us and clung to Papa - almost like she was punishing us ;)  But she got over it.

You LO is pretty teensy yet.  She won't even notice that you're gone :)

ETA:  Relax, have a few too many drinks and have FUN!

  • DD was 10 months. My parents kept her and unless they lied to me she didn't even act like we were gone. The hardest part for me was pulling out of the driveway. I never say goodbye to DD when I leave because I don't want to draw attention to the fact that I am leaving.

  • I work overnights (5p-7a) so with all 3 it was when they were 9 weeks old and I went back to work (just this past Tuesday with #3!)  But they were with DH.  We left DS with my parents when he was 3months - we both had work things.  When we had DD#1, we sent both kids to my parents house for NYE when she was 7 months.  With DD#2, we haven't both been away yet - but my college reunion is the beginning of June (6 months old), so definitely by then!

  • That sounds like so much fun! P was totally fine the first time we left him for the night. Of course I worried so much, but it was all me. My best advice is to let yourself check in after LO's bedtime and to try not to worry too much. I know it's hard, but have fun! Have a few drinks and enjoy the evening with your dh!

  • I hope you have fun! That sounds really nice. DH and I have never left DS with anyone overnight, so I don't have much advice to offer. We have checked in after V's bed time on the occasions when we have left him to go to dinner, weddings, etc. and tha always helped to put my mind at ease. I actually wish we had left him to go out more often when he was younger (your LO is at a great age) because it seems more difficult to leave him now that he understands more.
