Head Circum

Is it normal for a 15 month old's head circumference to not grow at all in 3 months?  I just had G's 15 month appt today, and her head was the exact same measurement it was at her 12 month, to the one hundredth of a centimeter.  Is that normal?  The doctor had left the room by the time I checked the growth report, and the nurse said it was typical, but seems odd.  My DS' head never did this, so I am not familiar.

Re: Head Circum

  • It could be possible that it wasn't measured correctly the last time. If you are really concerned, you can ask for a recheck in 3 months to keep an eye on things. I also take my own measurements at home. Head circ can easily be done with a piece of yarn and measuring tape.

According to our GI's records, my daughter shrunk an inch and a half between appointments. But really they just botched her height at our pervious appointment. It's amazing how far off some of these measurements can be.

  • I think that, like height, is easily mismeasured. DD's head consistently runs surprisingly small, so they often remeasure multiple times a well visit just to check, because, as they have told me, wiggly kids can easily cause them to measure the wrong part of the head.

  • I just checked DD2s stats, and hers stayed the same between 15 and 18 months, and it was still  over 90th %tile.  Both of my kids had kinda big heads as babies, and they slowed down a lot the second year :)
  • Thanks all!  I was worried, because it was the same number, but the percentage dropped- she was 33% at 12 months and now is 15% at 15 months.  I will start to measure at home when she is calmer- she was a bit wiggly!

  • Head circum is definately a hard one to measure.

FX kiddos have large heads: Sir I's is in the 104th percentile for his age!!!! His dev pedi almost ordered an MRI based on the size, even tho she works with lots of FK kids, she siad "I've seen lots of big heads, but that's really big!" Then she realized that one of her previous measurements had been off, so the huge growth jump she thought she was seeing really wasn't that big! And I spent 48 hrs worrying that he had a tumor or something :(
