Summer travel plans question

Hi! We are trying to firm up some summer travel plans. We have to request time off early and are also trying to coordinate with my siblings. We would be traveling 6-7 hours by car.

I am due with twins in late September, but I know that twins can come early. Is late July too close to that for a trip? Do doctors usually like you to stick closer to home in the last 2 months? We could also go in late June right after school lets out.

Anyone with experience or thoughts?

Re: Summer travel plans question

  • I would go with June...I did a 3.5hr car ride at 33 weeks and it was torture! You will be quite uncomfortable by late july and riskier that you might have to cancel plans !

  • oh and i forgot to mention at 33 weeks my dr stipulated we stop every hour for me to walk and stretch to avoid blood clots...makes for a long trip when you're stopping so much!
  • My OB was "uncomfortable" with me traveling after 23.5 weeks because of the small chance the babies could be saved if an early delivery were to occur. From 18-23, he would only let me go if I had a transvaginal u/s cervical check within one week of travel. In retrospect, I probably would have been okay traveling up to 32w. However, I was extremely uncomfortable in a car for more than 1-2 hours.

I would place a call to your doctor and ask his/her opinion. And, I would also consider the very real possibility of being very uncomfortable on the car ride and trip. Honestly, at that point all I wanted to do was lay on the couch, turn on the fan, and eat popsicles. So, that's what I did =).

  • I would go with the earlier travel plan. Even with a fairly uneventful twin pregnancy, by 3rd tri, walking around was just really exhausting and uncomfortable, whereas in 2nd tri I had more energy. We took a long weekend away when I was 24 weeks and I was fine being up and about overall, I could walk around the towns we visited as long as we took breaks periodically to sit.   A month later and walking through a parking lot and a lap around the grocery store was exhausting and required me to stop and sit pretty frequently.

  • Go early, you start feeling crummy big, tired, swollen after 27 weeks.
  • Ask your doc. Most don't want travel in 3rd tri.

  • Ditto everyone...the earlier the better! You'll be less uncomfortable and you have a better chance of not having any travel or activity restrictions.

  • The sooner the better. My doctor wouldn't let me travel out of the area after 25 weeks.

  • I would not travel far after mid to late 2nd tri for all the reasons others listed...I traveled for my shower 10 hrs in the car at 25 weeks (pumped my ankles regularly, moved my legs around and got out like every 2 hrs to walk around)...and one week after I got home I ended up on modified bedrest for the rest of my pregnancy...it had nothign to do w/ my trip, just saying that you never know what will happen and a certain point you don't want to be far from your dr/hospital just in case.
