Preemies

Worried about development

Hello- I haven't posted her in quite a while...My son is a little over 6 months old, 4.5 months adjusted. He has rolled over a few times but not consistantly. I think he's done it 5 times in the past 3 weeks. He's no where near able to sit up on his own, he falls right over. He was making some ba ba noises but it's come and go and hasn't been babbling at all in a while.

Right when he was born Help Me Grow changed their guidelines, babies didn't automatically qualify just because they were a preemie. They came out and evaluated him when he was a newborn and said at that point he didn't qualify and I should call at any time to have them reassess him if I feel like he is falling behind.

I know I need to go by his adjusted age, its just so hard for me to not worry about him not meeting milestones by his actual age. Especially since we have a neighbor who has a baby a month younger than him and is sitting up on his own.

He has his 6 month appointment next week and I'm going to bring all of this up to his pedi then. I think I'm just scared that because he didn't qualify as a newborn that I should be getting him extra help but I'm not. I just don't know how much extra time I should be giving him. At 4.5 months adjusted is that unreasonable that I'm expecting him to be able to roll over, sit up and babble?  I want to make sure if he needs extra help that he is getting it. I'm going to talk to his doctor about calling Help Me Grow to come back and reevaluate.

Thanks for listening

Yes, it is unreasonable to expect that at 4.5 months. DS, at FT wasn't doing any of those things until well after 6 months. A baby sitting on its own at 4.5 months is way ahead. If he's not doing any of those things at 9 months adjusted, then you have cause to worry.

All of this! Both my girls didn't sit up until around 7/ 8 months old. They didn't start to crawl until 9 months old. Definitely voice your concerns at his appointment.

  • It is still on the early side for those things (especially for babbling and sitting up), so I wouldn't worry too much. That being said, you are doing a good job by keeping a watch on your DS's development and trying to be proactive. I would discuss it with your pedi, for sure. That way, if you and his pedi feel like he hasn't reached certain milestones for his age or that others aren't emerging, you can seek evaluation/treatment early on if it's indeed needed at some point. It's hard not to be worried about your LO and over-analyze things (I know I do), especially when they were a preemie. Good luck!

Don't even consider is actual age when it comes to milestones when he is this young. Always adjusted. I know it's hard not to compare him to other babies, but really it sounds like he is right on track for adjusted and probably not too far behind for actual age. 5 months is even on the early side for sitting unassisted and all babies have a range of normal for hitting milestones that doesn't mean they are "delayed". My twins didn't sit well unassisted until they were 10mo/7adj. Your pedi will likely be just fine with his development for his age but it doesn't hurt to address your concerns with them.
