Twin pregnancies....

At my first few appointments I've been told that I am measuring bigger. Today at my appointment my midwife seemed to find what seemed like two heartbeats but she isn't for sure so she had me schedule an ultrasound to find out and to date the pregnancy as well. My question is, did any of you have a suspicion you were pregnant with twins or was it a total surprise? And were you able to hear two heartbeats on a doppler??

I had no clue but my friends husband teased me about it! My ob did ultrasounds because he couldnt find heartbeats on the doppler until about 12 to 14 weeks! GL !

I had a suspicion I was having twins but we put back 2 blasts with IVF so our chance of twins was 50/50. When is your ultrasound? I think that's the only way to know for sure.

Complete surprise here as identical twins is a spontaneous occurence and can happen to any one. We had an u/s at 6w and saw 2 babes though so long before you can detect on doppler.

Get an u/s stat!

I was COMPLETELY surprised!!! I got an U/S at my first appt (7 weeks) and they found three babies..and three heartbeats.

Total surprise for me too even though there are lots of twins in my family (still, like PP mentioned, identical twins can happen to anyone). The only way you can know for sure is by ultrasound.....good luck!

It never occurred to me that I might have twins. Without an ultrasound I never would have known well, I suppose when two babies came out of me that might have clued me in.

I thought I was and kept joking about it. I was wearing maternity jeans at 7 weeks so they did a dating u/s and found out there were two! Good luck!

I had a suspicion this time around that I just couldn't shake. This is my 4th pregnancy, but even with that fact, I was still showing much sooner than I would with just one little bean in there. Wink

I had an ultrasound at my first visit, so they didn't do the dopplar, and we found out then that there were two.

I suspected but it was more of a running joke in my family, not a serious feeling. I was still so shocked at my first u/s. I had spontaneous identicals so there was no good reason to really believe I was having twins. The only thing that made me suspicious was that I gained weight very quickly and started showing early. I am pretty thin to begin with so it was very obvious early on. My OB does dating u/s at 10 weeks before we ever tried with a doppler, that's how we found out.

I have spontaneous identical twins. We did not find out until our first ultrasound at 18 weeks...talk about a surprise! We listened to the heartbeat about 4 times during visits up until 18 weeks, but only heard one and never suspected that there were twins in there! Good luck!

My water intake didn't make sense to me. that was the only "symptom" I felt I had. I thought my utter exhaustion was just the price I had to pay since I wasn't puking up my guts

We had an u/s at 12 weeks because the doctor couldn't find a heartbeat and were shocked to see that it was identical twins. We had our u/s the same day as our appt though, I can't imagine having to wait!

I had a hunch but it wasn't based on anything tangible as I had no reason to believe I was (no fertility treatments etc). Even with my hunch I was super surprised when we saw two on the ultrasound! We were not able to detect both heartbeats very well in the beginning because they were so close together that it was hard to really know who was who. An ultrasound is the only real way to know if there is more than one baby in there. Regardless, congrats on your pregnancy and good luck!

I had an increased chance to do family history of spontanous faternal twins in addition to my Chlomid.

DH claims he knew the entire time. I joked about it, but thought "Really, what are the odds?!" I too was not able to wear my regular pants very early on. I had the belly band on at 8 weeks. I could have buttoned my pants but they honestly just hurt.

We have never heard two heart beats at once on the doppler other then mine and a baby. The doctor can always find one baby very quickly and then has to search for baby two for a few minutes. Its different each time which one he finds first. So honestly, if you weren't looking for another hb you would never know there was two in there.

I took clomid so I knew it was a possibility, although my RE didn't think the odds were that high. I just had a really strong suspicion. I was also sick much earlier than with my last pregnancy, although you can't really base anything on that. I had an early u/s since I was seeing an RE, and even though I suspected, it was still pretty surprising!

When is your u/s?

My SIL kept joking that I was having twins because I felt big early on and starting wearing maternity pants (or just wearing yoga pants) at around 4-5 weeks... but i thought it was mostly bloating or something... what did I know? ?I was never pregnant before! Then at almost 7 weeks I started spotting and was told to go to the ER to get things checked out... they did an u/s (my first) and I immediately saw the U/S tech's face drop...I assumed the worst and expected her to tell me we miscarried...she sensed my emotions and said "oh honey! ?no..! ?Look....there's TWO healthy babies growing in there!"?

?Twins don't run in either of our familys - and last summer I was told I may not be able to conceive...so this was all a HUGE shock to me. ?All I could do was laugh & cry at the same time. ??

I found out at 10 weeks from our first u/s because my OB wanted true confirmation on a solid date. The tech asked if I had serious sickness but I never thought anything of it with this being my first. When I sad yes she told us I was carrying two babies she told us then it was spontaneous identical twins. She was also able to tell us they were mono / di at that time.

Just as an add on the heart beats are almost identical so on the Doppler it sounded like one until my last appointment at 16 weeks she was able to separate them and determine the two. In the past the two were picked up only on u/s.

I have a friend with fraternal boy/girl twins. They are babies 4and5, she had no clue she was expecting twins until a prenatal appointment where her doctor thought he heard 2 heartbeats. She was then sent for an ultrasound to find out it was indeed twins. Rare, but it happens!
