Baby Names

Wilhelmina and Eilene

I never thought in a million years that I would like Wilhelmina, but it is really growing on me. My mom's maiden name is Wilhelm, and I love the idea of incorporating it if we have a DD. I love the NN Willa. I remember someone from way back in the Nest days who used the NN Winny. Not sure I would do it, but it's pretty cute. Thoughts?

Eilene (this spelling) is a very special family name to me, and I definitely want to use it as a middle name (not necessarily for Wilhelmina). Any other variations/similar names to this that would work for a first name? Not interested in Eilene as a first name. TIA

  • I like Wilhelmina with Mina as the nn.

A friend of mine just had a DD and named her Aubrey Eilene.

  • Wow, Wilhelmina .... NMS, but if the significance is there and important to you, use it.  I do not like the nn Winny at all .... however, I like the nn the pp suggested ... Mina.

There are lots of names that go well with Eilene.  What is your name style?  That would help to make suggestions.  Leslie Eilene? Miriam Eilene? Corinne Eilene? Abigail Eilene? Olivia Eilene? etc. etc. etc.

Wihelmina is a bit of a mouthful IMO. It could grow on me though. I love the NN Mina with it, and the family significance makes me like it more.

Totally agree, which is why I don't know if I can commit. Pretty sure I won't be able to get DH on board.

Out of your list, Olivia is more my style. I can think of lots of first names to go with Eilene, but what I am looking for is a similar name to Eilene that could be used as FN. We will most likely just stick with it as a MN, but I was just looking for suggestions. Thanks!

Oh got ya!  I misread what you originally wrote!  haha. Similar names to Eilene .... hmmm.  How about these: Eila, Eilena, Eilin, Eily, Eilwen, Elia, Eliana, Elyanne.  (I busted out the baby name book for those! hahaha!)

  • Love Wilhelmina!! We are naming our little one Wednesday with Winnie as a nn. There are no real nns for Wednesday, but we picked Winnie.

Wilhelmina has so many nicknames. I like Willie, Winnie, Willa and Mina. All cute!
  • Willa Katherine (Willa Kate) is my Name Love right now, but DH won't let me use it.  I think Wilhelmina is utter gorgeous, but I just don't know if I'd use it in it's entirely at a first name.

    How about Willa Eilene?

  • Love Wilhelmina! It was my late grandmother's name so I have many positive associations with it. Love both Willa and Mina as NN.

  • Willa is such a lovely nickname!

Wilhelmina was a Dutch queen, and 'Wilhelm' is a name most Dutch royals share. Our 'founding father' was Wilhelm of Nassau, he's a Dutch hero. Our anthem is called 'Wilhemus'. So if you want to honor your mothers' maiden name (is there Dutch heritage involved), but can't commit to Wilhelmina, maybe another Dutch royal name will do the trick?

The current queen is called Beatrix, her mother (daughter of Wilhelmina) was called Juliana, and there has been a queen regent (when Wilhelmina was a minor) called Emma. Other grandchildren of Queen Wilhelmina are princesses Irene, Christina and Margriet (like Margaret). I think Juliana Eilene sounds nice.

  • I just read the Wikipedia entry on Wilhelmina, quite a women! Apparently, her full name was "Wilhelmina Helena Pauline of Orange", and as a princess she went by the name of Pauline.

  • I LOVE the name Wilhelmina. Unfortunately, the only reason it appeals to DH is because he knows my family wouldn't like it. That aside, he can't get on board with me. It's such a gorgeous name!!! I guess it will have to remain on my GP name list. Sad

    Lovely choice!
