inhaler tip from a friend.

Remember how a few weeks ago I said I was struggling to give DS his "Puffer" every day.  I am talking inhaler and chamber with mask combo.

I was saying it was a two man job and it was hard with my stupid arm.  I mentioned it to a friend who has two little boys with Asthma.  She said, "Oh you just need to know the trick."

Lie baby on the floor body against the wall.  Put baby's arms up over his/her head and hold with one hand.  Baby can't move his or her head in either direction because their own arms are holding them still. The wall prevents the baby from rolling over.  It requires very little effort.  DS still screams his head off but at least it doesn't take two adults and a three year old to administer the inhaler.

Re: inhaler tip from a friend.

  • Is there a reason they want you to use that instead of a nebulizer? I don't think I've ever seen a kid under 4 or 5 use one of those instead of the neb. I know when we had to do breathing treatments with Lo with the albuterol she liked laying down with it blowing at her face.

I was wondering the same..  How come inhaler over a nebulizer?

Our asthma specialist has Gavin on an inhaler like this since he was about 7 months old. I think he said its more effective and the one med Gavin is on doesn't come in nebulizer form. Plus it takes less time?

  • If you have a very active kid like DS they will get only a very small amount of meds from the nebulizer. We can't keep him still for the 10 min it takes to give both meds. The puffer works a lot faster!

When G was on neb treatments it took 30 minutes each time! He hated it.

That makes sense.  Especially if it's something that is routine and not just when sick.  B only had to use the nevulizer 1x (knock on wood) this season when she had RSV/Bronchiolotis/Pneumonia

  • It's because he has to have it twice a day and it takes less than a minute.  It's torture for him to stay still even that long.
