Two Under 2

Logistics question with 2u2 - maneuvering at daycare

So how do you get them both to daycare in a reasonable way?  Older one is in daycare and plan on starting the younger one when she's around 5 months (actually not due till June - just thinking ahead).  You can't leave the younger in the car while you take the older in, and my older one will be 18 months when #2 is born, if she's not walking well by then, do I need to get them both into a stroller just to get into day care?  Carry one in the car seat and one by hand?  How do you manage to make this not into an hour long maneuver??

  • This was something that I never thought of until it happened...  dropping off at preschool is something that I hate doing.

When DS was first born, it was easy.  He would stay in his infant carseat and I would carry him in one hand and my DD on my other hip - they are 14 months apart.  Not the easiest of tasks with backpacks and lunch boxes  - but it worked.

Things get trickier the more mobile they become! Both kids wear their backpacks and carry their own lunch box, and I make them hold my hand through the parking lot...  Once we get to the sidewalk they run/walk on their own.  It will be super complicated next year because one will go through the car line (it's their rule for 3 and up) and I'll have to take the other one in.  It's going to take forever.

  • OP, I can understand your being nervous. DD2 turned 18 months last week and she's not really walking yet. Buuuut she is good enough that she can walk with us holding only one hand. I know she is definitely not the norm though, so I doubt you will actually need to carry your older child into DC when the time comes.

As far as logistics go, you take baby out first, set him down (assuming he's in a bucket seat), then get LO#1 out. Have LO#1 hold onto the car/your leg/whatever while you pick up the car seat, then hold onto LO#1's hand as you walk into DC.

It's going to be a slow process, but I'm sure you'll be able to do it all under an hour :)

  • If you have a moby wrap or something like that you can put that on at home, when you get there you can take baby out of car first, pop them in the wrap and then get the older child out of the car. If they can walk you have two hands to deal with them and the diaper bag, if they can't walk yet (one of my friends LOs just figured out walking at 19 months and wouldn't walk into DC yet) you can still pop them on your hip.

I'd drop the eldest off first then baby.

  • I didn't start mine in DC until DD was 2 and DS was 8mo. I would put DS in the stroller and have DD walk and hold my hand. We would go to the toddler room first then I'd go to the baby room. Recently DD moved to an upstairs classroom so now she helps me take DS to the baby room then we go upstairs. I don't use the stroller anymore to save time I just carry DS. It does take me about 20mins to get in and out.

  • I haul them both in our double stroller.  I work in the same building as the daycare and I have to bring milk and lunch and cloth diapers each day for the kid along with my work bag and pump bag so it is so much easier to shove it all in the stroller with the two kids.  I have it down to a science now and the daycare has a carseat/stroller storage room so I leave the stuff there until I pick them up.

  • My older son goes to a "mothers day out" school once a week. Right now it's snowy and Icey so I have to carry him and ds2. Taking a stroller isn't an option, because there are stairs. So...I get Ds2 out first in his carrier and set him down while I get ds2 out. Then I carry both of them into school and set Dow ds2's carrier while I get ds1's coat off and over to his teacher. Once ds2 outgrows his carrier I don't know what I will do lol.
