I know there is a multiples board, but I like that the twin moms in here are in the same stage of pregnancy as I am, so I wanted to post here...sorry!
Have any of you read Dr Luke's book "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, Quads"? I ask because I noticed a few of you in the thread below about our bumps seemed to have only gained a few lbs so far.
The book really emphasizes how crucial it is to gain a lot of our weight in the first half of the pregnancy to help prevent premature labor and if we do go early, that the babies will be larger and healthier.
I am average weight and BMI and it says that I should have gained between 12 and 18 lbs already and that I should be eating 3500 calories a day. I haven't counted my calories but I don't think I can eat that much! I have been eating whatever I want, and not anything particularly healthy since I am trying to eat whatever I can with my limited appetite right now but I have only gained 4-5 lbs. I drink a ton of milk and drinks with calories throughout the day to help. And I am ashamed to admit I have been eating Taco Bell or In & Out on a daily basis, but hey...it's protein and carbs!
I notice some people on the Multiples board think the advice is excessive and I asked my doctor who told me I am fine and keep doing what I am doing. So I am just curious if your doctors have mentioned anything about your weight or if they all think it is fine to gain slowly?

That's great...very healthy birth weights! I am definitely doing well on the dairy end of things...I am a milk and cheese fanatic. I am doing pretty well on protein. Veggies have been gagging me but they don't really add many calories anyways...hopefully my vitamins make up for my lack of veggie intake. I have been looking at it as a free pizza, grilled cheese and cheeseburger pass, but maybe I need to get on board with milkshakes:) I know I should gain between 35 and 50, so my goal is to gain what you did. I think it is completely feasible and should be easy to do over the pregnancy, I just don't see it being easy to gain so much in the first 20 weeks, especially with food aversions!

My husband and I have read part of that book so far. I do really like it. I know that there are other MoMs on the multiples group that liked the book, but not the nutrition portion of the book. I personally have only gained about 3 lbs or so - not much at all. My doctor isn't concerned about it at all. I think that we will make up for it in the 2nd trimester. I too am having a difficult time eating veggies! I really need to get more in my diet. Protein too. I am pretty good with dairy and cheese. I think we can just do the best that we can. I would probably just follow your doctor's guidelines on the weight gain for now. And, know that you will probably make up for the weight gain here pretty soon.
I have no idea if the FB group was started. I would love to know if it was! Please keep me updated.
Raymond...you poor thing!! I hope you start feeling better soon.
Kellibelle...I like the rest of the book too, and I get the reasoning behind the nutrition. I just don't know if I find it feasible. But yes, I am sure when I start packing on pounds in the second trimester I won't be worried at all, lol. I am just going to keep doing what I am doing as my doctor seems happy.

we will have to finish it!
I have actually lost weight. (I do have some extra to spare though) I haven't read the book so this is the first I heard about gaining more weight in the beginning. I had read several times that if you start out with extra weight then you really don't need to gain as much. But I think that was with singleton pregnancies. Now I am curious. I have a Dr. appointment Monday so I will be sure to get his take on it.
Right now I would not be able to get in any where near 3500 calories. I am lucky to eat what I am eating as I feel sick most of the day. The vomiting has slowed a bit, but I still feel nauseaus constantly.
