A day without a gay

Are you kidding me?  I'm all for Prop 8, but our economy is already not in good heath.  Many merchants say they will stay open because they're trying to avoid the red.

I wonder what would they come up with if the day without an immigrant slogan hadn't already existed?

Re: A day without a gay

  • It had better not fall on Dec 17th because that's when my hair-color appointment is.

  • I haven't heard anything about this... are all gay's taking the day off on the same day?!

that's as absurd as "nobody buy gas on this day, and they'll HAVE to lower the price!".....taking ONE day to do something will not get a point across.

  • michaeltrish I'm cleaning sprite off my desk now LMAO

  • Wait, wait, wait, WHAT is this???

My jaw literally hit my desk when I saw the header of this post.

Well, it is.  Stick out tongue

  • I found it on yahoo's homepage, right around the middle of the page.  It's a video.
  • Being for Prop 8 means you would support the ban on gay marriage, not support their right to marry. ?

I don't really have a problem with the protest; one day of not shopping or working, even in a lousy economy, is tiny in comparison with having your basic human rights taken away by a bunch of homophobic bigots. ?

    ?

  • I don't have a problem with people doing this, but I think it's not going to work out how the organizers intend.

The goal is to show how much this country relies on gay people by all of them calling in gay one day - and by showing that they hope to show that they are a big part of this country (and thus deserve same civil rights).

While I agree that they do, and am a huge propoent of gay marriage - I just don't see it working out how they intend.

I'm all for it, but, crossing my fingers that it doesn't fall on Dec 17th.  My hair is a train wreck and I have to book with him a month in advance.  And if it does, I'll deal.  We should be able to marry whomever we choose.

  • I think this effort is misguided. For the most part, it's not employers who are against gay rights, and that's who this will hurt.

I don't follow.  How do we rely on an individual based on their sexuality?

My bust.  Then I'm not for Prop 8.  Big whooops!!

  • It just means they want to show how many gay people there are in America that are discriminated against.

Any job they do, they are relied upon.  Their point is that they are a large segment (and an important one) of the population but don't have equal rights and they are trying to show that by having people call off work because of being gay.

  • Gotcha!

Is that you in your sig?  Very cute, you are!!!!!!!!

  • Yes, thanks!

And your question is part of why I think it won't work out how they intend.  I think people could lose jobs, and I think it might not make the impact they want it to or people won't draw the conclusions they want them to.  Guess we'll see.

  • Another problem with this plan is that it creates an uncomfortable situation for "in the closet" gays.  I heard an interview with the organizer on the radio a few weeks ago, and his solution is that they should just call in sick that day.  Anyone who doesn't want to be out-ed won't want to take the risk of calling in sick and basically outing themselves, but they'll feel like a traitor if they do go to work.
  • I told my DH and his thought was "Just don't call in sick that day".  His luck, that would be the day he decides to take off...
