Pregnant after 35

Extreme fatigue

I'm 7w4d today and have been experiencing exhaustion by mid-afternoon.  I'm a substitute teacher at the elementary level and am grateful to be home between 2:30-3pm daily.  All I can do is collapse on the couch and usually fall asleep for 2 hours!! I don't like feeling like this...not myself.  I guess this is just the beginning?!

Re: Extreme fatigue

  • Yep :) It will get better, but for now, grab a nap when you can! It will help save your sanity. I went to bed early a lot in 1st Tri. :)

  • That's normal and it's actually a good sign, it means your body is working hard to accommodate its new resident, who is growing like crazy. :)  I had to slow down a bit during 1st tri.  I couldn't exercise quite as hard as usual and I often went to bed early.  It *is* just the beginning, but that part of things will get better by 2nd tri.  Most ladies get their energy back then.  Of course there's other fun stuff to look forward to in 2nd and 3rd tri lol.  But hang in there, this will pass, and you will likely feel better in a few weeks. :)

  • I think I'm just all out of wack because I had more energy in my 1st tri, slowed down a bit in 2nd tri and am now down right exhausted in 3rd tri.. LOL, but be assured that's not most women's experience so you should be feeling a little better in a few weeks!

1st tri was exhausting.  I was disapppointed that I did not get the 2nd tri burst of energy that I was promised.  The nesting energy in 3rd tri was awesome for the few days that it lasted.  I am so tired now that I am working half days whenever possible.

  • Pregnancy hormones. You may find that you have energy at different times of the day. If you need to get stuff done, capitalize on energy when you have it. Otherwise, yes, pick up the extra nap and go to bed early.

It may help you to have your prenatal or iron supplement during mid morning and be sure to get a full serving of protein with your lunch. Have a snack (banana and some nuts) when you get off work.

For many women the exhaustion lessens during the 2nd tri when the placenta takes over most of it's own hormonal processes and there are lower hormone levels in your blood stream.

  • Oh boy... I just started week 11 and Monday was the first day since the beginning of the pregnancy that I have felt like a human being.  I didn't believe it was EVER going to get better!  My bones were tired--it was the most powerful exhaustion I have ever experienced since mono in college.

Hang in there!  It will get better.  Confused

  • I'm a fourth grade teacher, and I was so exhausted in the first trimester.  I was going to bed each night by 7pm (on the late nights!).  However, once I hit 13 weeks, it was so much better!  I started gettting tired again (but nothing like the first tri) around 23 weeks, so I did have 10 weeks there with my normal level of energy.  Teaching takes a lot of energy....and that's hard when you're older and pregnant!

    **DS - 11/9/00**

    **DD2 - 4/30/13**

  • totally normal.  although they say you regain energy in the 2nd trimester, i have found I am not!  I'm still tired.  i guess being pregnant at 35 is alot different then when i had my last at 24 lol

  • I am also a teacher 1 st grade. I have an hour commute and at work from 74 I am exhausted Wish I could take a nap!

  • Add me to the exhaustion list. I work really early but even with 8hr sleep, I am still out of it. Rounding the corner to my 2nd trimester and hoping it gets better soon.

  • When I was in my 1st tri I felt like a walking zombie!  I was always so tired and to make matters worse I had all-day morning sickness.  I don't know how I made it through because I could barely function.  I teach at a community college and there were so many days that I didn't do a very good job teaching because I felt horrible.

Now I'm in my 2nd tri and I still get tired but it isn't as bad as the 1st tri.  I think a combination of cutting back on the caffeine and being busy with a full-time job and teenagers is adding to the tiredness.
