I have been stalking this board for a while now, but never post. I have met my limit with frustration and decided I would see what you all thought. This is my first baby and am due on March 20. I have had no complications at all, however, I was overweight prior to getting pregnant. I also have managed hypothyroidism. To date, 34 weeks, I have only gained 9.5 pounds total.
Before my 20 week ultrasound by Dr. told me that she would want me to do a growth scan every 6 weeks after my 20 week one. That went so well that she told me just to do it in 8 weeks, which put that ultrasound on January 2. I went to MFM that day for my ultrasound and the baby was measuring big (91 percentile) for weight. It just so happens that I failed my one hour GD test on the Friday prior and the 3 hour test wasn't until Jan. 4. I passed all 4 sections in the normal range.
Based on that day's ultrasound the Perinatoligist told me that we would wait and see what the GD results were. That day I went ahead and scheduled an appointment for Jan. 28 to follow up on growth scan.
Then I went for my 32 week appt. on Jan 23 and my Dr. said everything was great. She asked that I go for another growth scan in 2-3 weeks and if the baby was 90th percentile or greater to do one more in another 2-3 weeks. I referenced that I already had an appt on Jan 28 and she said it was fine to keep it.
So I go to my Jan 28 ultrasound at MFM and the tech tells me that it was in my chart to start weekly monitoring at 32 weeks. I was not scheduled to see a Dr. that day. She did the ultrasound and the baby was in the 81 percentile for weight. She then did a NST and all was fine. I was confused as to why it was in my chart for me to have weekly monitoring, after I didn't have GD. The notes were old.
I decided to wait until my appointment today (34 weeks) to talk with my Dr. about it before I scheduled weekly monitoring. I saw the nurse practioner today and she totally understood exactly what I was saying and why I was frustrated. She told me that she wanted to run it past my Dr. first.
Well, as you probably figured by now, I got a call and my Dr. thinks that "it is in my best interest" to do the weekly scans. I just don't know what to do. If I thought that there was a reason, I would gladly do it, but at this point I feel as if they are passing it off on being overweight before pregnancy and that it is a ploy to make money. I mean, if I hadn't kept that Jan. 28 appt, I wouldnt even have gone yet! Everytime I go for one, it is a copay, dr. bill, hospital bill and time off of work. No high blood pressure, no GD, no excessive weight gain, no swelling, no contractions.
What would you do? Thanks in advance!
Re: What would you do in my situation? Long....
Well, you're welcome to refuse any treatment you don't want. That may mean that you need to find a new doctor.
I will say that I'm going through something similar. I'm overweight, I passed then failed a repeat glucose load, tested my blood sugar for a few weeks and was found to not have GD. I've continued having my baby's growth monitored because that's what my doctor felt was necessary to ensure that I wasn't developing GD later in the pregnancy.
It really is up to you. I decided to continue with what my doctor said because it gave me peace of mind and I trust what my OB says. If you're unhappy with your course of treatment, don't do it.
It's a girl!
I would check and see with my insurance if they are getting billed by the doctor as globally or for every individual visit and see exactly what their plan is when it comes to prenatal care. Also, just IMO, I would do what my doctor says. Period.
The reason I say this with the insurance is bc my doc office was billing my appts visit by visit instead of globally and when I talked to my HR about it they said we should have only had to pay 1 co pay and everything else was covered at 100%
Been married since 2009.
Unicornuate Uterus (yes I menstruate glitter)
Several MCs
DD born 2013 (our miracle "you can't have babies" baby!)
I was obese before getting pregnant as well...so I'd like to start by saying congratulations on your less than 10 lb weight gain! I've gained 25 lbs already!
If you really trust your OB then talk to her about your financial concerns regarding all of the ultrasounds, etc. But I agree with PP that I would do whatever my doctor said, because I trust what he says completely.
GL!
I'm in the same boat with weeky NST's. My doctor said that it was because i have high blood pressure, but it is being well controlled by medicine. i have went for 6 so far at over one thousand dollars each! if i go to my due date there is another easy four thousand dollars! I just wonder if its because i have 2 insurances, one thru my employer and one thru my husbands. so they know they are getting paid one way or another! At the same time i think well the doc. ordered it, i have to do it he is the doctor, but i really wonder how "necesary" it is and i do enjoy hearing LO's heartbeat for a half hour. I ' m afraid something will be wrong if i dont go and then i will kick myself for not going! oh well only 4 more possible times left!
I would have a sit down with your OB and ask them all of these questions. Demand a firm explanation for all the testing and what there is to gain from it.
It sounds extremely excessive to me and I know a few people who were overweight before pregnancy and did not have anything like this.
If you don't think there is any merit I would find a new doctor because they are setting you up for an induction or c-section from what you have described.
If there is something to it all then continue your care.
Good luck and don't be afraid to speak up and question!! I know medical stuff can be intimidating but this is your baby and your body and any OB should be consulting you on what is happening and why, not just doing stuff. I wish I would have switched before I did!!
Good luck with your delivery!!
