Working from home 1 day a week

Anyone else work from home 1 day a week?  Do you find that people look at you differently?  I am the only one in my department that works from home once a week.  My company has "flexible hours" so I know it's ok and my boss approved it, but I still feel like everyone is wondering what I do at home.  To be honest, I am sitting in my home office while the nanny is taking care of the kids.

Re: Working from home 1 day a week

  • I work from home at least one day a week, sometimes more.  I am online all day, taking calls and emailing and IMing c/w's so I don't think anyone wonders if I am really working.  If you are insecure about it, I would just make sure you are communicating with your C/W's, if you would normally do so in the office, so they can see that you are in fact working.  I tend to answer emails faster when I am at home, because I want to make sure people know I am at my PC.

  • Yes, we can WFH 1 day per week.  I've been doing it a lot more recently since DD started daycare and is sick all the time.  (I need to find a childcare alternative.)

I don't worry too much about what people think because many if not all of my collegues WFH.  We are judged by the work we produce, not by the location in which we produce it.

  • yes. I don't do it often at all but that's why, because I feel like people are skeptical that I'm actually doing anything...

... haha as I sit here at my desk bumping... Wink

  • I work from home also one day per week.  I had one person make a comment about it but really just ignored her.  Not any of her business.  It is an agreement between me and my manager.  Other people should have no opinion on the issue - if it wasn't working or my manager had problems with it he would address it with me.  I just do what pp said and make sure I am extra dilligent about responding to emails quickly - which isn't too hard because I actually get more work done at home without all the walk up interruptions.

  • I do, but it is pretty common in my office.  I do make sure I am accessible and communicating with people throughout the day.

  • I work from home on Monday's.  My dept is 3 people, and we each take one day at home.  We're also kind of secluded from the rest of our bigger department, so I have no idea if people notice or not.

And to be honest- I don't actually care.  I work from home, my boss is happy w/ my output.  That's all I worry about.

  • Occasionally I work from home, but I do feel the pressure to be "visible" from home. I make sure to start sending emails at the beginning of the work day and continue periodically...sometimes I hold onto an email till close to 5pm to send it out!

  • At less-busy times of the year, yes.  It's an opportunity extended to all personnel whose jobs are compatible with telecommuting.
  • I used to worry about this, but our internal IM system now shows if you have been away from your computer for more than 5 minutes.  It also displays how long you have been away.

As a result I feel like I can never print a deck and focus on a call, I have to keep that little tiny circle in green status so everyone knows I am working.  Crazy making.

  • Yes I do this. I work a 4 day work week with one of those days from home. We have very few people at my company who work a flexible schedule like this and I am the only one in my department. I do think that there are probably people who have negative opinions on it. The truth is I feel like I have to work even harder and be more productive so that they continue to allow me to work this schedule. So I would say that I feel that I need to compensate for this benefit that I have.
  • I do!  Most people at my company work M-Th, but people who deal with customers have to work Fridays.  We are allowed to WFH or come to the office.  I stay at home unless I need to come in for something.  There doesn't seem to be any judgment toward those who WFH.  As long as the work is getting done, they don't care where you are.

My work has the same thing.
