invites - how early to send?

I haven't sent out invites to anything since our wedding and honestly I have no clue what the etiquette is for how early to send birthday invites. We are inviting several out of state family, so I intend to have their invites arrive approximately a month before the date to allow for the best price air travel. (I don't expect 90% of them to come anyway). What is your plan for local people? Is 3 weeks appropriate or should I aim for a month for them too? I realize I am totally overthinking.. 1st world problems, oy!

The party is 3/16, I want people to RSVP by 3/9 (doubt they will though). Will be mailing them out next week. About 1 month before the RSVP date.

Sounds like we are all kind of thinking along the same lines. I did hear once from someone that the best way to get responses to something is to have it arrive on a Friday. Then people will more likely handle it right away because they want to take care of "business" before the weekend. Not sure how valid that is, but I'm going to try it out.

We're having DS' party on 2/17 (b-day is 2/24 but ILs will be in town the weekend of the 17th, so we're having it when they're here). I sent the invites out about a month before.
