High-Risk Pregnancy

Short cervix????

I am 19 weeks with my 4th baby! They have been watching my cervix due to PTRM with my last pregnancy. At 15 weeks my cervix measured 4.5cm today at 19 weeks I measured 1.8cm with fluid leakage??? Doctor didn't say much so I am kinda lost. All I know is they are sending me to a High Risk Doctor! Any tips or experiences that may help me?!?!?

Re: Short cervix????

  • Honestly I am still really confused!!! The Ultra sound tech showed us where the fluid was as far down as the cervix wall where they measured and showed us where it was supposed I be?
  • Loading the player...
  • I was just put on light bed rest at 25 weeks for a short cervix, but mine is 2.4 so it's not too bad yet.  They are just concerned at the speed it's shortening.

If the doctor didn't say much, I would just be really careful to limit physical activity until you see the high risk doctor.  Try to stay off your feet as much as you can.

I have read lots of stories online of women who started taking it easy, and their cervix length jumped up (it can get longer)

Not sure about the leakage though...

    Good luck!!

I'm a high-risk prenatal nurse, and it sounds like you need to make sure to ask plenty of questions when you see the high risk OB. But 1.8 is pretty short. Ordinarily, I would think you were headed for a cerclage, but probably not if they suspect you're leaking fluid. If there's a leak in the bag of waters, I'm pretty sure that doing a cerclage is contraindicated, as it would put you and the baby at a huge risk for infection.

The high-risk doc will probably re-measure your cervix and amniotic fluid levels before deciding what's appropriate. I would guess bedrest and antibiotics as a preventative measure, plus a lot of waiting and seeing, but I guess it depends on what your doctor sees.

FX for you, I really hope you're not actually leaking fluid at 19 weeks, as that's not a super encouraging thing for them to find. :(  Hope you get some answers with the high risk doc soon, sending T&P your way.

All of this is really good information.  Are you actually leaking fluid or are your membranes bulging?  Why are you not in the hospital?  I do know that if your membranes are bulging they will not do a cerclage, but that doesn't mean they can't do some techniques to encourage your membranes back up.  I think the high risk doctor will give you a plan.  Good luck and praying for you and your LO.

  • I have a short cervix (currently .8cm) with no funneling or bulging of membranes.  I'm hoping they used wrong terms when speaking to you and you don't actually have fluid leaking.  Do you feel wet?  I am 24 weeks and so it's too late for me to have a cerclage.  I was told that bulging or funneling would put me in the hospital.

I am on complete bed rest.  If I were you, I would put myself on bed rest until you speak with the high risk doctor.

Completely reclined or laying on your side

Up for bathroom breaks and quick food prep

    No lifting

Good luck and keep us posted!

ETA:  Things to ask your doctor

    1)  Do I have funneling?
    2)  Do I have bulging membranes?
    3)  Is my cervix closed?
    4)  How often will I be monitired?  Weekly?  Every other week?
    5)  Am I a candicate for a cerclage?
    6)  Am I on bed rest?
    7)  What exactly do you mean by bed rest (GET SPECIFICS, ask about your job etc.)
    8)  What are the next steps?
    9)  Am I a candidate for progesterone supplementation?  Shots or Suppositories?

  • I talked with my doctor today who was unavailable yesterday she sai my cervix jumped from great 4.5 to not good 1.8 in 4 wks.... I have have Preterm rupture of membranes in a previous pregnancy so she is worried..... The bag has not ruptured but is in the cervical area or "bulging" the tech just used the wrong words with me!! I go see the MFM in the morning and on strict bedrest until then!!
  • I am glad to hear your membranes have not ruptured and you are on bedrest. Praying for you, LO, and the doctors that are going to help you through this. Keep us updated.
  • Have you been to the doctor yet today?  Just wondering what they had to say.  I hope all is well.
