FML... RAST results in

Otis had a level II positive allergic reaction to dog dander and a level III positive reaction to cat dander.  The levels don't really indicate the severity of the reaction, there's just 0 = no reaction and anything 1-6 is a positive reaction.

As for what this all means for the animals in our lives, that's uncertain.  This sucks...  TERRIBLY.

ETA:  No food allergies.

Oh no! I am so sad for you. What sucky position you guys are in. Do you know of anyone who could take your pets so at least you could see them once in awhile? I mean, if you decide to give them up, of course.

Ha!  Yeah, we've been through the "roster" of animals and tentatively decided their fates.  :)  Luckily, we've got generous family and friends.  Some of our friends and family joke that they're leaving with "parting gifts" because we have a couple of cats that are SO freakin' cool.

Good! I would be heartbroken if we had to give up our pets so I'm glad you have some wonderful people in your lives to help you.

Ugh. Pets are such big parts of our lives. I'm really sad for you, J&K.

And even now I'm reconsidering how re-homing to friends and family would even work.  We visit these people and spend nights in their homes, spend days at playgroup, etc.  Of course, we're not going to ask these people to make accommodations regarding their own pets when we visit, but how to limit the exposure when we're increasing their animal population with our pets?  I think this is about to get pretty sad.

Is a daily allergy pill out of the question?

Even that's a crappy solution to the problem, KWIM?

All I have seen are the actual results from the testing.  I haven't talked to the allergist yet today.  We'll see what's up.

  • I'm so sorry! What an awful position to be in.
  • What a tough situation. At least some of the positive is you can find homes for them easily or possible to take a allergy pill. Either way it is still tough. Sorry JK.

  • Ohhh, J&K, I'm am so so sorry.  Our pets are a huge part of our family, I can't image how tough this is going to be for yours.

Hopefully the allergies aren't too severe?  And maybe they'll grow out of them?  I really know very little about allergies in kiddos, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about here.  Just wishing that there might be some hope that you don't have to re-home your animals  :(

  • That is terrible.  I don't even know what we'd do if we had to give up our dogs.  Most of our friends already have 2 and I would hate to separate them.

I hope talking with the allergist gives you a clearer picture of the severity of O's reactions.

  • :(

Both myself and my kids are allergic to our cats, but we still keep them around. We just have runny noses quite often.
