High-Risk Pregnancy

New here with a ton of questions & TMI (I'm sure)...

Good morning ladies and congratulations to all of you.

I'm here because I need to vent, not necessarily looking for anyone to tell me everything will be okay ie; my husband and mother but rather read other experiences.

We got our first BFP on January 27th and the second on February 3rd with no symptoms other than larger, tender breasts. This past Monday I had a light brown discharge when wiping, similar to the tail-end of ones period. Tuesday it was slightly darker and more frequent so I called my OB/GYN and they saw me yesterday afternoon. According to my dates I should be around 6weeks but the vaginal u/s showed only a thickening uterus, no sac. I'm going for blood work this morning and then on Friday to check my HCG levels. My breasts are no longer tender and I don't feel pregnant. I have mild cramping, but have ever since my missed period. I miscarried @ 6weeks in Sept. 2010 and am praying I'm not there again...

I'm 40 and my husband is 44 - maybe my eggs / his sperm are too tired or defective? Aside from prenatal vitamins is there something else I should be taking? Neither one of us want to go the fertility drug route.

  • Just wanted to say good luck and keep your chin up.

My SO and I started trying when I was about 40 1/2 and he was 41.  I spent my 40th bday in the ICU and left with a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.  We had two early miscarriages within the first 14 months.  I had to just keep the attitude that, with my age and health issues, if it's meant to be it will happen.  The last miscarriage happened last May and in July I was, shocklingly, pregnant again.  We're now almost 31 weeks along and I will be 42 1/2 when LO is born.  I've not taken anything other than prenatals.  If you're on any other meds you might ask your doc about them.  I was also on a cholesterol medication that you really can't take if you're pregnant or trying.

We definitely didn't want to do the fertility thing either.  Again, good luck.  Sending some positive vibes your way.

  • Thanks Tig594, your story definitely gives me hope.

I just got back from my first blood draw, results should be in 1-2days, but I'll need to go back again Friday to see where my hCG level is. There was a stuffed Tigger on the shelf in the exam room (I ABSOLUTELY ADORE TIGGER, collect mugs, stuffed animals - all things Tigger) and address labels in my mailbox from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital when I got home, taking both as a sign that God has heard my prayers.

Congratulations on your "almost" arrival, I'm super excited for you Big Smile

Friends of ours conceived twins at the age of 46, so its not so much my age that frightens me but wondering if my eggs are viable.

I was on Paxil for a short time, but with the first BFP called my doctor and was told to stop taking immediately, which I did.

Thanks for the positive vibes and for being the ONLY one out of 52 viewers to reply. I hope you continue to feel good and please keep in touch.

  • I had an early miscarriage in July 2012 and was pregant again in October.  Hopefully, I'll deliver in July 2013 at age 43 (ftm).  Only meds I ever took were  prenatal vitamins.  My husband will be 44 when I deliver.

If you are concerned about the quality of your eggs, speak to your OB/GYN.  I was told I needed 2 blood tests, the second on the third day of my period.  I never got to take the second because I pregnant between the blood tests.  My husband was supposed to get his sperm checked but, again, I got pregnant before his appointment.

I am with you about not wanting to go the fertility route but there are less invasive things the doctor might recommend like taking Clomid, I believe.

    Good luck with everything.

  • It doesn't sound like you miscarried with the minimal bleeding. You are still in the very early stages of your pregnancy so a lot can happen. Your doctor will tell you what more you need to do if this is a viable pregnancy. Good luck and prayers for a happy and healthy nine months.

  • Thanks ladies for the encouraging words, positive vibes and prayers.

I've had some bleeding today...dark in color definitely not bright bright red and not quite a period followed with some lower back pain. I'm trying to convince myself it's due to the exam and vaginal u/s yesterday.

Congrats to all of you and thanks for being such a caring community of women Big Smile

  • I just wanted to update you ladies; as of Wednesday evening at 10:15...I am no longer pregnant. Unfortunately, Nelson baby #2 has passed on to be another Angel for my husband and me.

We met with my OB yesterday and after reviewing my blood results; hCG level 244 and progesterone 1.4, he recommended a fertility specialist. Given my age and two failed pregnancies he'd rather we go right to the experts rather than "experiment" for six months with progesterone.

Although this is a huge disappointment, I'm optimistic because I can get pregnant, just need to find out why their not implanting.

Thank you again for the support and kinds words and best of luck to all of you and your bumps.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Like pp stated fertility doesn't have to be invasive or super expensive. Keep in faith that you can get pregnant and the docs will figure out what's going on. God will bless you with a child yet! Good luck to you and your family.
