NBFR,but kid/toy related - I'm thoroughly confused

SIL sent DD's present. It's an OOTW doll. Apparently there are several of them. This one is Flix.

Supposedly it projects 5 second movies on the wall and ceiling of a dark room.

WTH? 

DD has not realized this yet, and I'll wait until bedtime, but I'm trying to figure out what the fascination is.

Anyone's daughter have one? And do they love it?

    I have never heard of these, but I Googled the dolls.  It doesn't sound educational at all, but they have some good, fun reviews.  I might suggest DH get one for his DD8.  He's a techie and so is she, so it appears to be a girly, techie doll, which would be good for each.

    What's techy about it?  It just runs mini movies. I'm not impressed.

    The reviews and the website seem techie.  Probably too simple for an 8 year old, but something that can be built upon, App's and such.  

    I guess I'm remembering my own childhood, 30 years ago.  Something like this would have been amazing, now it might be boring.  There appears to be more online for the toy to download to make it more.
