We are going to a gala tomorrow night and it's cocktail attire. I bought this dress and it's a burgundy purple color. I only have some black pumps with an around-the-ankle strap, would those work? I was going to wear gold jewelry, but I don't want to make the black shoes look, harsh(?). Does that make sense?
Should I go shopping for gold shoes, silver shoes, or stiletto pumps?
Any help would be awesome!

I would go with gold or bronze for the shoe. But it depends how "big" your jewelry is. If you are wearing statement gold jewelry, you might want to have toned down shoes. But if it's simple gold jewelry, I think metallic shoes are awesome.
I also can't tell if it's a long or short skirt. Short skirt would make your shoes more obvious (I would think) - long skirt less so, so metallic peeking out - even with big jewelry might be fun.
Re: the black pumps with strap.... I tend to avoid ankle straps because I have short chunky legs and I don't like how they "cut" my leg. If your dress is long (or you have long awesome legs! whoooo!), it's probably fine, but I avoid ankle straps with shorter skirts (as I said, I can't tell if you have a long or short dress!). But I think black is fine with the purple.

Oooh....just had another idea....if you are shopping anyway, GREEN shoes (the right green/the right shoe) might look awesome! It would depend on the shoe and your jewelry - it might be risky - you don't want to look too Mardi Gras -but I love contrasting shoes in bold colors!
No shopping=black, strappy shoes. Silver jewlery.
Shopping=Silver shoes, mix the gold and silver jewlery. Have a great time!

Thanks, ladies! What great ideas!!!!!!!!!! I posted this and ran to the stores. I sooo didn't want to go shopping but thought I should try and see what's out there.
Here's what I came home with...
I got the blue and the green ones. They were only $10 each, so I figured I could bring em home and see how they do with the dress. They are SO comfy and they are so cute, but they are just too much for the dress, I think. So I think I am screwed and will have to wear some black heels. I do have another pair of patent leather black pointy toe ones that I could see how they go with the dress, but I think I may have to go with the round toe ankle strap ones. It's just that kinda dress. And speaking of, I got it at Forever21. It's surprisingly modest and concealing and kind to the mushy parts of my body. lol.
The gala is for the Auto Show. Detroit has an annual auto show, but Toledo does a gala to raise money for autism. It's a nice classy event that you get to dress up for and then sit in all the awesome cars that are worth more than my house. And it's open bar...did I mention? "May I have a side of Shiraz with my Chardonnay?" HA!
Thanks again for the help ladies. I will update you tomorrow on what I go with. I still have the whole issue about how to do my hair...with a toddler rifling through my bathroom drawers. Siiiiiiigh.
Ps. I looked at Target for silver or gold shoes...I kinda think gold would have just made the dress but neither were available. I'm so bummed about the black shoes and I think I am doing a disservice to the dress. You ladies were spot on with the anti-black shoes, but, I do think I have to settle for them.
