Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Moms who still ebf...

has AF come back yet? My LO 10 months and is on solids 3x a day.  He still nurses 5-6x in 24 hours.  I'm worried I have a thyroid issue going on (weight gain, fatigue, no AF) but my OB says it is just from nursing and won't test me.

Should I have AF by now, or is different for every woman?

Thanks!

Re: Moms who still ebf...

  • No AF here!  Shawn is almost 10 months; he nurses 3 to 4 times a day still, and I supplement one bottle of formula in the afternoon.  I had an IUD put in when LO was 8 weeks so I don't know if that has an effect also.  I'm not complaining!

  • None here, but I'm on depo. Do you have a PCP? You should have a "regular" doctor anyway. If not, I would find one and voice your concerns. There's no reason they shouldn't test you, but that's not really an OB's job.

  • It's totally different for every woman. For some women, their period won't return until they completely stop breastfeeding. For others, it comes back sooner. Mine came back when LO was 8 months old, but my best friend's didn't come back until her LO was 13 months old.

  • Nothing here. My DD just turned 10 months and I have yet to have AF return. Let me say though it gets old buying pregnancy test to test every month! I never know if no AF is because I still EBF or baby number two is in the way.

  • I am still nursing, and I also have PCOS. I recently started dropping pumping sessions, since I have tons of milk in the freezer. I got AF today. I really wasn't expecting to get it either. Weight gain and fatigue are reason enough for a lactating woman to get tested for thyroid issues. I saw an endocrinologist yesterday who was very interested to hear that I was gaining weight while BF. If your OB won't do it- I suggest going to see a PCP, and tell them what your symptoms are. The lack of AF in your case is not abnormal- it could be the case that it won't return until you fully wean.

  • AF came back for me when DD turned 9 months.  I was very surprised.  It actually arrived sooner than I thought.  We bedshare and DD was literally attached to my boob all night long.

  • No AF here!  LO is 11 mo 1 wk and BF 3-4 x's/day.  I just count myself as one of the lucky ones! :)

  • mine came back at 7 months - literally one month after I went back to work and started pumping during the day.  Pretty crazy how the body just knows... In any event, enjoy it while it lasts!
  • It's different for everyone. I got AF at eight weeks post partum. I also got pregnant five months out while still exclusively breastfeeding.
  • Nursing three times a day... no AF.

  • I EBF and got AF back at 6 months exactly. I also have a thyroid issue that I take medication for.

ETA: When AF returns is different for everyone! I wouldn't use that to indicate a thyroid issue. When my meds are off, I get extremely fatigued and the weight gain happens pretty rapidly.
