Shopping?

I have to go grocery shopping today due to both kids being sick and not able to go to daycare. DH is working late and can't help out. And I have no idea how take them both. I was thinking either having DD walk and DS in the cart, however I think DD will run away during the 90 minute trip. The other thing I was thinking was to take the double stroller and make multiple checkouts and put things in the car every time the basket gets full, but this would extend the trip. The other thing I was thinking is to take the single stroller with DD in it and then put DS in the cart top and push both at the same time, however I thought this might be difficult. What do you do? Any advice that has worked?

Re: Shopping?

  • I'd have DD walk for as long as she can and if she gets antsy have her ride on standing in the front, like in front of you as you push, or IN the big part of the basket.

I definitely wouldn't do your other options. I'm on mobile though and can't see how old your children are, DD specifically.

  • 99% of my shopping is done with both kids. I've done it a few different ways:

When DD2 was still in the infant carrier, I put DD1 in the seat of the cart and DD2 in the carrier in the basket of the cart. I stacked groceries around her seat and in one of those hand baskets most stores have set on the bottom of the cart.

Now that we aren't using the infant carrier, DD2 sits in the seat of the cart and DD1 sits in the basket. I stack groceries around her, and she "organizes" them for me :)

I have also put DD2 in the seat of the cart and let DD1 walk. I still worry she'll get separated from me as we try to squeeze through aisles full of people, so this isn't my favorite option, but I do it once in a while for quick trips or when the store isn't too busy so DD1 can practice staying with me.

  • our store has the cart with the car attached to the front with two seats.  Does your store have that?  Otherwise I say use a carrier with your youngest.  It's a good workout at least :)

  • Good god woman why would grocery shopping take 90 mins? With 2 sick kids I would just go for the absolute necessities and go by myself another day. If you have the carts with the car on the front I'd put your older one in there. Otherwise put one on the seat and one in the basket. You can shove stuff around them. Good luck!

Duh didn't even think about using the carrier with the youngest!

  • Do none of your stores have double carts. Most of our carts can seat 2 kids sidebyside.
On phone so can't see kid ages but could you wear one in a front pack and sit one in the cart?

This! 99.9% of my food shopping is done with my kids with me. It is rare I get out shopping without them. When they were younger they both fit in the too part next to each other (its a single seat in our store although BJs has the double seat). Now DS sits on the top part and DD sits in the basket. She also "organizes" the food. Whenever we to out food shopping I always buy them those squeeze packs from Earths Best and it keeps they quiet. Our shopping trips take less than 1 hr from leaving the house, getting in car seats, shopping then getting home and putting groceries away.

  • If DH is just working late and not out of town, and you have what you need to get through today, I would wait until he got home and/or kids are in bed and go.  If you are needing to do a big stocking up trip and really focus, going solo would be MUCH easier.
  • 90 min in a grocery store does sound like a LONG time! I'd put number 2 in a carrier and number 1 in the cart. I SAH and I refuse to go shopping when DH is home because the stores are insane here (we don't have 24 hour stores) when people are off of work. So this means that when this baby decides to arrive they will both be with me. I don't foresee DD being able to walk to grocery store for a while so one baby on me and one in the cart will be my strategy.

As long as you have a good carrier a 10 month old won't be any issue for wearing around the grocery store, I still wear DD at 19 months.
