LO has developed eczema on his back - mainly around where his diaper rubs, but now there's little spots all over his back. We were at the pedi on Saturday (ear infection) and it's not serious, but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or home remedies that have been effective.
The pedi suggested that when he sleeps, sweat may pool under his back and cause dryness, but he's a belly/side sleeper, so that's out. Her next idea was the bath, but the water barely covers his butt, let alone his back (he gets baths twice a week). I use free & clear detergent (same since DS was born), there's a humidifier going in his room, and I rub him down with an organic baby oil every night (he has always had super-sensitive skin). We don't smoke, and he hasn't started any new foods recently.
I have oatmeal bath, but since it's on his back the water level doesn't go up high enough for that to be effective. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
Re: eczema
My LO gets a spot of eczema on her face and we tried so many different remedies, most only worked a little or temporarily. One we found effective is called Sweet Cheeks. Its made by a company called Dimpleskins Naturals (https://www.dimpleskinsnaturals.com/). The thing we have found most effective is Aveeno Soothing Relief lotion. It made the spot go away and it has barely came back. When it does we use a little more lotion a couple times and its gone again.
Hope that helps!
What kind of soap and shampoo are you using? DS has eczema and we have to use a perfume free soap and shampoo.
That helps cut down on the hot spots and we treat those that remain. We use aquaphor which is a super thick cream. I put it on there morning and night.
As a lifetime sufferer of eczema, I can give this advice: First Aquaphor will definitely help-- and especially at night because it acts as a barrier. If he is sweating, it'll keep it from irritating his skin. Since it's so greasy, it's not always easy to keep on (it doesn't absorb) but keeping it on as much as possible will help.
Second, make baths quick. Don't let him soak in the tub for long periods of time. Make it all business! When you pull him out, pat him dry and slather on the Aquaphor.I don't know if you can use it on babies, but look into CeraVe, too. It's really mild, moisturizing and good on my eczema but it absorbs very well, too. It's a great whole body lotion.
Finally, and this is one of the most important things to control my eczema, do not use ANYTHING on his skin with fragrance in it, especially soaps, shampoos or lotions. Just because something is organic does not necessarily mean that are no added fragrances. Read all the labels. "Fragrance" is often hidden in things that you wouldn't expect. If you use anything on yourself that is heavily fragranced, make sure you wash your hands/arms before touching your son. I used to get transfer spots from a certain soap that an ex-boyfriend used!
I hope you can gt under control. Eczema stinks!
Our pedi prescribed a lotion (Hydrocortisone 1%), which is a low strength steroid. Our LO had a bad patch on her face that was getting better, she also had a patch on her lower back and shoulder. We took her to the doctor because DC thought it was ringworm. We were told to use as little as possible twice a day. The patch cleared up (but is back now). The one on her face, I think, comes from the paci and the one on her back from the diaper. My husband also has skin issues and regularly gets a heat rash at his sock line.
We tried the Vaseline and Aquaphor, use (still use) only fragrance free everything.
Thanks for the advice everyone! I already have been putting Aquaphor under his chin, due to the constant drooling, so I'll start putting it on his back as well and start there.
I use all Arbonne Baby Care products on LO (baby wash and oil) - a friend got them for me as a shower gift, and any time I try to use something else he breaks out. I try to get him oiled up as soon as he gets out of the tub, but he's gotten so squirmy - and fast!
