Working Moms

BFing moms who travel

I leave DD tomorrow for 5 days.  I plan to pump while I'm gone but my question is, do you ever ship BM back while you are away?  I don't have a good freezer stash and it would be helpful if there was a way to send it FedEx or something.  Any recommendations?

Otherwise, its all coming home in a cooler!  TIA

Re: BFing moms who travel

  • I was about to write a very similar post. I'm going to a conference for three days at the end of January and just wanted to see if people have any tips. I assume I should try to pump every 3 hours around the clock to keep my supply up since I won't have DD to nurse. Isn't that pretty much the rule for the exclusive pumpers? DH says to throw it away and don't worry about storing it.  I hate to do it...all that work down the toilet. Agh! But how could I take a cooler of BM on a plane? I don't think that would be allowed.

  • Breastmilk actually *is* allowed on the plane.  It's an exception to the rule.  I haven't done it myself, but that's what I've heard.  Also, you can ship it via FedEx overnight in dry ice.

     Good luck!

  • Where do you get dry ice?
  • you can ship it back on dry ice (not sure where to get it, ask Fed Ex), but I am sure its pretty expensive too.  I brought a cooler with me & carried it on the plane - they checked it , but no problems.  I had little ice packs in there as well.  I also brought this w/ me in case in questions came up as I did have an airport worker tell me I couldn't bring it back w/out the baby..and I pulled this out!

    GL!

  • I typically bring it back with me from business trips, as sara describes.

But when we moved out of state, I did ship my entire freezer stash, on dry ice via FedEx. It cost about $175 to ship 135 oz of breastmilk in glass bottles and 10 lbs of dry ice (way more than I needed) in a hard-sided cooler. You could bring down the cost if you used a styrofoam cooler and milk storage bags. Full details here: https://worklifeunbalanced.blogspot.com/2008/06/shipping-breastmilk.html
