Toddler Moms Check In

Hi toddler moms. One day late again for our check in but I still want to do it so we are. Smile

This check-in is for moms with a toddler(s) age 12-36 months.

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

Re: Toddler Moms Check In

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

He has started climbing anything he can, and is fast as lightening, so DH, the nanny and I wind up tracking him down every minute to make sure he is not scaling something inappropriate.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

At 16 months, DS has had a resurgence of separation anxiety, and it is difficult for me to get out of the house in the morning.  He loves the nanny, and once I'm gone he's fine, but it has made my mornings really tough.

Also, and I welcome any thoughts on this, DS is still not doing well with solids.  He is inconsistent (eats something once, but never again, eats things with different textures but not all things with that same texture) so I am not sure it is a "sensory" issue -- and he has food sensitivities so his list of possible foods is limited (no dairy or soy) --  but feeding him purees when he has 16 (yes, 16!) teeth is starting to seem pretty ridiculous.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

Pre-potty-training potty humor:  We are working on the whole appropriate body part naming thing, and he has developed a fondness for the word "penis" -- or as he says it, "piss".  So when you change his diaper, he tries to reach down and says "piss".  Which confused my mother to no end, as she asked "why did you teach him to say 'piss'?"  Um, Mom, we didn't.  He got that one all on his own.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

Horribly.  We are lucky to get 5 seconds of brushing, and he has 16 teeth, so we know it is important!

Learning to count, and letter recognition. I didn't even think to push this until I saw her pointing at the letter k in her books and saying "key." Now she recognizes about a dozen and I try to teach her a new one every few days.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

starting to think about taking away the pacifier. She only uses it at bedtime or naps, but it's definitely her sleep cue. I'm debating between taking it away cold turkey or the Bye Bye Binky method. Haven't decided...and also may decide to do nothing!

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

at daycare, I gave her a sippy cup of milk and asked her what it was.  She said, "wine?" The sitter and I both cracked up. Oops!

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

She tolerates it well, most of the time. Sometimes it's a battle.  If she won't let me so it, sometimes she'll let DH do it.

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

She's still picking up words like crazy.  Her newest is Oval.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

She fights me every day with her nap.  I think she is just going through that stage where she doesn't want to miss anything.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

She likes to put her sand bucket on her head and walk around the house and bump into things.  She's such a dork :)

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

The morning is a little bit of a challenge--she doesn't always want to.  But I usually can eventually get her to do it and then let me do it for a minute or so.  She loves brushing her teeth after bath time.  I start and do the good brushing and then she just basically sucks and chews on it, but she likes it :)

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

She's really into counting, singing her version of the alphabet, and naming planets. Her favorites are Mars, "Benus" and "Muckery"

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

Sleep. She does. not. nap. at home. She will nap for 2-3 hours at school, but will not sleep here. She also usually takes a lot of coaxing to get her to sleep at night. It's been a huge PITA as I hardly get any sleep as it is with my work and school schedule.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

She likes to throw all of the pillows off the couch and fall forward onto the pile.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well? We are still using a finger toothbrush. She will not let us brush with a regular one. But, it's part of our bath routine and she usually asks for us to brush her teeth. She says "mommy brush teeth!! AHHHH" and opens her mouth. It's pretty dang cute...

Hi toddler moms. One day late again for our check in but I still want to do it so we are. Smile

This check-in is for moms with a toddler(s) age 12-36 months.

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

hes really starting to recognize letters and shapes.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

tantrums. They never end. Today there was a tantrum because mommy apparently peeled the banana wrong. I'm still not sure what is proper banana peeling etiquette.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

Today while we were working on colors he started arguing with me. Obviously I don't know everything is green or orange. There are no other options.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

in the mornings he brushes his teeth with me. This is mostly chewing on the brush. In the evenings dh holds him down while I do the best I can. Most days I just a few swipes in. We've had better luck using the spinbrushes.

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Climbing on everything!

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.) For a while there, she was throwing tantrums all the time. She was just a big, crying mess. It seems to be getting better but then not really. She is also very independent and wants to do everything by herself. It is so hard not to just step in and get it done faster. Patience is a work in progress.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? Not really saying anything funny but we've been working on body parts. When I ask "where is your butt?" she will grab her butt with both hands. Super cute, for now.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well? Teeth brushing is no fun. When we say it is time to brush her teeth, she will gladly run to the bathroom. She doesn't mind chewing on the toothbrush but as soon as I try to get a few good swipes, she flips out. I think it has more to do with the fact that she doesn't want me to do it for her than not liking having her teeth brushed.

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? He is really into running around the house, as fast as he can, for no reason. I think he's copying the dog, but I'm not quite sure. & if we tell him to go stand on a letter on his floor mat in his room & he does pretty well.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.) Nothing I can think of...

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? When I asked him "who am I", trying to prompt mom, momma or mommy (to see what he uses most) he said, "bebe in a belly". Yeah.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well? We brush before bed. I let him "brush" (he moslty chews on the brush & looks in the mirror) while I brush my own. When I'm done we switch tooth brushes for him (he's got 2, one for him to use with the trainer tooth paste & the one I use on him with real tooth paste). I have him lay down on the floor with his hands to his sides & I sit on top of him to pin him down & tell him to open up. We make funny faces so I can get all his teeth pretty good. He doesn't love it, but he will lay down every time. (We just started using real tooth paste because child has terrible man breath. & we have well water so he needs a floride supplement anyway.)

This is hilarious.  Among his words, DS knows "cork" (for wine corks) and "shake" for the martini shaker...is that so wrong?  (needless to say in the short term he won't be seeing much of these things since I am on the wagon!)

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Hmm. Not really sure she did anything new this week. She's obsessed with this book Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and I'm about to tear my ears off if I have to read it one more time.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.) She's teething again, so has been really whiny this week. One 2 year molar has popped one corner through...we have a long way to go.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? Not this week.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?  We haven't had issues with this unless she's teething. Letting her "do it myself" after we brush them seems to keep her happy.

Some days she seems ready for potty training, others not, so we do it here and there, but I'm really struggling with when to bite the bullet and just give it a try. I let her pick out some big girl underwear at Target last night, so that's another step in the right direction. I know she's going to get there soon but I'd rather either see if we can make it work now or wait a while after this next LO gets here, b/c I think potty training a toddler with a newborn is just asking for trouble.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

Like every day! She's hilarious. The other day she rattled off, "I love my daddy, my buppa (my dad) and my ducky (her Donald Duck)." Apparently in that order, no arguments.

QOTW: How does teeth brushing go at your house? Any tips for those who have challenging toddlers in that department? What works well and what hasn't worked so well?

Hit or miss for us. It's been a bit better lately but the last couple of months she will fight us tooth and nail when it's our turn. She loves to do it herself but obv. doesn't do much actual brushing. I've tried us going first and her going first and either way she fights.
