Question for those w/ LOs with teeth...

When do you plan on LOs first dental appt? A friend of mine is a pedodontist and he said they recommend the first visit when LO first cuts a tooth.. Seems early to me. DS has 5 teeth so I need to start looking...also, how are you cleaning their teeth?

ive been using a wash cloth...but I guess I may have to get a toothbrush as well...

Re: Question for those w/ LOs with teeth...

  • Around 3 years old. That's when I took DS and they couldn't do anything but look in his mouth. That's all he would let them do.

There are baby tooth brushes you can buy that fit on the end of your finger.

    HTH.

  • My pedi said normally the recommendation 6 months after first tooth or a year.  My DD only had one at a year so my pedi said go with the 6 month rule dont worry about the year mark and she went at 18 months.  They don't really do anything until they are 2.5 up until that point they count the teeth, look them over and brush them with a small child's brush and educate the parents.  I would wait until he is a year.  I used the wash cloth until DD had more than one tooth and then I switched to a finger brush.  We are using a wash cloth with DS he has two teeth. My regular dentist said he would start seeing her at 3 years old but I like the pedi dentist so we will stick with that for now.

You will hear many opinions on the correct age, but this is an example of why my pedi said they recommend starting early it gets them use to the experience.  Additionally, they like to catch any issues caused by bottles. Other than that really no reason to rush even my adult dentist said she would be fine if we waited until three as long as we followed the recommendations for cleaning etc..  My DD had her teeth cleaned with an electric brush last time, her third visit, at 2.5 years and was fine with it. She talks about the dentist, who gets on her for thumb sucking, so now she tells everyone that the doctor says she has to stop but she can?t LOL.

  • all the pediatric dentists in our area say at 1 year old or 6 months after they cut the first tooth, whichever comes first. We will schedule DD's first appointment for sometime in May. She just has the two bottom teeth. So far, we've just used a washcloth to wipe her gums & teeth.

  • When they first cut a tooth seems way too early to me. My DS cut a tooth at 4 months! No way I would have taken him to the dentist then.

I don't know when we'll take him but now that you mentioned it, I will ask at our 8 month well visit.

As for cleaning, I haven't been doing anything to clean his teeth. Another question I will ask the doctor. :)

  • My dentist says 3 years but I have heard by 1 year.
  • 3 years old is the norm around here. Some dentist do a teeth tickle at 12-18 months just to go over with new parents how to take care of the teeth but for a cleaning its 3years old.

Once they get teeth we start using a soft finger brush then once they are a year we do the training toothpaste and a level 1 toothbrush twice a day.

  • I plan to at 3 years old. My son has all of his teeth in at just over 2 years old and he is yet to go. We brush his teeth twice daily as well.
