Babies: 6 - 9 Months

First cold

Dd has her first cold. She is very very snotty and fussy. No fever, thank goodness. She won't let me put her down. She is trying to sleep on me in the recliner. Any suggestions on things to do to make her feel better? We've been suctioning nose often, and napping on an incline. She vomited this morning, she probably threw up all but 2 oz of formula. She has had another bottle of about 6oz. Since then. I'm going to give her juice when she wakes up, to help with hydration.

Re: First cold

  • Are you using saline when you do nasal suctioning?  It can help moisten and loosen more of the crud in there.  Other than that, sounds like you're doing fine mama!

  • You're doing all the right things mama!  I would highly suggest getting a nosefrida to get the snot out.  It works so much better than those other things!! Just make sure she is having 6 wet diapers a day.  I would try to just keep giving her formula rather than juice bc that will hydrate her and get her feeling much better.  If she refuses the formula and starts to dehydrate, call your ped.  They will probably have you give her pedialyte.  Also boogie wipes help a lot bc they dont dry out their noses.  Best of luck and hope she feels better soon!
  • we did steam showers and little noses drops and A LOT of nose suctioning. We put a pillow under the crib mattress so that DS was on an incline, but we put him up too high once and he rolled down...it was kinda cute.

We also put vicks on his feet ant night and it seemed to help.

I don't know if juice is the right thing or not to give her. The pedi said as long as there were wet diapers then we were ok with hydration, she did say we could give pedialite if we wanted to, but did need to. could you give her water if you are worried about hydration.

DS also took his naps on me when he was sick, but I tried to make him sleep in his crib as much as possible at night.

  • Sorry you guys, I meant pedialite. I called her doc too, just to ask about formula intake and pedialite. I just feel so bad for my little monkey.

  • Also, thought I'd pass this along to you ladies.  I'm big on reducing the nasty crap by LO ingests, and Pedialyte has artificial dyes & flavors.  Homemade Pedialyte is definitely a cheaper, healthier route.

Definitely the humidifier. We use one at night when DD has a cold and she isn't stuffy all night long. It's incredibly helpful.
