Natural Birth

numbing shot

Is it still considered a natural birth if you get the numbing shot?

Re: numbing shot

  • Like to get stitches in my VAGINA?

I count it as a natural or unmedicated birth. The baby was born without medications. The fact I needed a bit of meds to repair my hoo-ha, and then IV antibiotics to avoid an infection from the damage he did on the way out, in no way makes me feel like my birth was less than anyone else's.

  • Thanks. I wanted a natural birth but on our way to the hospital I was ready to push in the and in parking lot and just wanted some drugs.

Well when we finally got there I was already at a 10 so they gave me a shot to numb so that I could properly push.

  • A shot to numb after birth for repairs I would say still counts as a med free birth for sure but a shot before birth for pain management I'd say does not count as med free, but that's just me!

  • I didn't know they did that before baby is born!  Did it help with the 'ring of fire'?

As to your question, the term 'natural birth' has so many different meanings.  Some would say any birth that is not a c-section is 'natural'.  The hard core purists could probably argue that any intervention no matter how minor means it wasn't 'natural'.  Then there is everyone in the middle.  At the end of the day, what does it really matter :)

  • To me, no. A natural birth is painmed free. A local for stitches after the baby is born or meds for postpartum pain do not impact the baby or birth process, so those don't negate a natural birth.

  • What you got is called a Pudenal block.  Its not techically pain med free but I would still say I had a natural birth if I got one.  You still felt all your contractions, just not the burning from pushing

  • Do YOU consider it a natural birth?

At the end of the day, who cares? To me, a natural birth is premised on the philosophy that mom trusts her body to do what it needs to do. Sometimes interventions are necessary, but the idea is that we support and encourage the natural process rather than interfere with it. My definition has nothing to do with how much a mom "suffered" and everything to do with how we approach and manage the birth process.

    Yes

I can't roll my eyes enough at some of the definitions and nitpicking about what is and is not a "natural" birth.  And really one could argue that all births are natural.  There is never anything unnatural about a baby coming into the world.

  • I had one of these. Though I claim I went pain med free with DS's birth, I guess that wasnt entirely the case!

There was certainly not much natural about my birth: I had to be induced for medical reasons, and after pushing for 3 hours with DS's noggin hung up on my pubic bone, I was seriously rescued by this numbing shot. With it my OB was able to turn my little big headed posterior boy around and get him the rest of the way out with vacuum.

Even with all that intervention the nurses kept congratulating me on "going natural"! Ha!

I'm not sure what if I would or not. It's sort of a toss up to me. All the nurses said it was a natural but since I didn't feel everything I'm not sure.

I think the nurses are right; being able to "feel everything" isn't what makes something a natural birth. You'll get a variety of opinions on what is and is not a natural birth but personally, I think it's ridiculous to argue about what is essentially a line in the sand.

We're all here, I hope, because we have a different way of thinking about what's best for mom and baby during labor and delivery. At the same time, you'll hear from women who had a range of experiences, and very few of them eschewed all modern medicine, either prenatally or while giving birth.

So my opinion is that if a mom thinks she had a natural birth, she did. If you're passionate about these issues, congratulations, you can join this board! Don't let anyone tell you that you didn't go natural "enough."

  • I would say it's natural.  I apparently had a "numbing shot" but I never knew it until my husband told me after the fact. After about 7 min of pushing DS's heart rate kept dropping dramatically after each contraction and we needed to get him out. My OB did an episiotomy because she used forceps to help guide him out. Obviously there was enough pain that I didn't even realize I'd had the shot, I still consider it a natural birth....
