Extra strength desitin vs. regular

I typically use regular desitin on DD's bum when it's rashy, but recently she had a really bad rash, and while the regular desitin worked as well as it could on this and it eventually cleared up, I bought some of the extra strength stuff during this figuring it'd be better.  I've used it a few times now and it seems to actually do a worse job.  I've just used it on less "extreme" rashes, but it doesn't seem to do as well as the regular stuff (and it smells nasty, I think).  Is it just me?  Or has anyone else noticed this?

Re: Extra strength desitin vs. regular

  • I've only ever used the maximum strength on any rash (mild to terrible) and I've never had to use it for more than 2 days in a row, so I thought it was pretty awesome. Most of the time if I put some on in the morning, by bed time the rash would be nearly gone.

  • I think it works the same too, and you're right.  It smells AWFUL!

  • It does smell funky, but it works for us - the same, maybe a little better than the regular.

  • I never found any desitin to be all that helpful, and not worth the stink and mess that it makes.  We've been using aquaphor for a few months now, and have found that it works better than anything.

We cloth diaper most of the time, but when we had some bad rashes during her first few teeth I used Butt Paste (we had a sample).

It doesn't smell and it worked great overnight.

You can also try using powder to prevent the rash.  My sister-in-law used Monkey Butt (I think that's what it's called) on her daughter regularly to prevent a rash.

  • I've only ever used regular desitin, but for a really bad rash we recently used Dr. Smith's. It really helped when it seemed like it was out of league for the regular Desitin.

Mustela has also worked really well for us, we got that as a gift when LO was born; but I haven't seen it in stores so we switched to Dr. Smiths.

To me, the one that smells bad and is messy is actually the Boudreaux Butt Paste. I know a PP said they like it a lot, and we also got it as a gift from someone who liked it. But it's beige (like some poops) and has a very strong odor IMO.

  • I only use the regular. The maximum strength stuff smells bad and the few times I DID use it, it made the rash worse.

  • We usually use lanolin (the type you use for BF'ing) for the few diaper rashes DS has had.  Worked much better than Desitin did when he had a bad rash.
