not having the NT Scan

I have decided to not have the NT scan....I read that it cannot tell you for sure whether or not your baby has a condition...a normal result doesn't guarantee your baby won't be affected, and an abnormal result doesn't guarantee a baby with one of those conditions...Plus I read about a ton of false positives. I know it is such a personal thing and to each there own but it wouldn't make a difference if there was something abnormal...just had to share I made this decision.

I opted out as well. Even if you get a positive result you have to wait for a few weeks for more testing to be done and under no circumstances would I have an amnio to confirm something like that. I talked to my doc and I don't have any risk factors either so that helped confim my decision. I didn'thave one last time either.

It's not a false positive per say. It's more of the 1 in 1,000 chance instead of yes or no.

We also decided not to do the NT scan.

We will be getting it. I've had enough reg. u/s that I'm probably okay, but the NT scan can detect with 100% certainty some incompatible with life conditions such as anencephaly. I'd rather know my baby won't live sooner rather than later.

Honestly, the only reason I'm getting it is because my OB office doesn't do any kind of early ultrasound, so the NT scan is the only chance I have to see baby until the A/S. Flame if you will but that's my reason. I honestly don't think I would make any major decisions about my pregnancy based on the NT results.

We did the NT scan with DS, but are doing the newer MaterniT21 test with this one. It was recommended based on my age.

My OB doesn't even offer it as a routine test. They only do an anatomy scan at 20 weeks. If you're AMA they will do an early sono just to make sure all is well though.

We didn't do it with DD, but we will do it this time. After two losses, I want to see my baby as many times as I can and know as much info as possible.

We are doing the NT scan and then if anything is questionable with that, we'll follow up with the MateriT21 test. I won't do CVS or amnio. Since I'm older testing is strongly recommended and, while we wouldn't end the pregnancy, we'd like to be prepared for any potential issues.

I am choosing to do it this time because it's another opportunity to see my LO. My OB's office doesn't do many ultrasounds, and since I'm not having the best luck finding baby's heartbeat on my home doppler, I love the chance to see baby again and just make sure all is well. Finding out that we are at increased risk for disorders will not change my feelings or intentions about this pregnancy. I just want to see baby again.

Of course, after I'd scheduled my NT scan, my doctor told me she wants to do an extra ultrasound at my appointment the day before the scan to check on the blood clot she found. So I'll have ultrasounds two days in a row. Oh well.

We also opted out. We talked about it with our doctor and she suggested we not get it since we would continue on with the pregnancy either way. Although, it would have been nice to see the baby again before the a/s

We are also doing the MaterniT21. I'm doing that tomorrow along with other blood work. What tests we do after that depend on those results. Making decisions based on my age, as well.

We've decided to go ahead and have it done. I have LOTS of friends who didn't and a couple who did. My very slight concern is that we have a family member who does have Down Syndrome. My grandmother was older when she had her so that is most likely the reason but if we do have a child with Down Syndrome I think both me and my husband would need to be prepared. On a positive note, it IS another opportunity to see the LO. Assuming I'm low risk, I know there aren't many opportunities along the way so I will take what I can get and be prepared with whatever comes at us at the same time.
This is a very personal decision and one that no person can judge another for making. I think whatever decision you make you should feel comfortable with it. That's the most important thing.

I'm confused about the "number of false positives" statement. I thought that with an NT scan they tell you the odds of a certain abnormality, and if it looks ominous your odds can go from the usual 1 in 5000 (or whatever) to 1 in 30. But 1 in 30 is not a false positive...the odds are still heavily stacked against the abnormality. Even if they say 1 in 5 your odds are still against the abnormality.

Maybe it's just that doctors don't know how to communicate the results. Most people are devastated with a shift in odds to 1 in 30 but if you know about probabilities you shouldn't be worried....

ETA: like the others, we are getting it done in part because it's our only u/s before the anatomy u/s. Well I think DH could hold out that long but I'd like to give the baby a look before then. We did a similar test last time and it was just nice to see the odds decrease (from something like 1 in 5000 to something like 1 in 20000) for whatever they were testing. But I'm forcing myself not to worry if I get a 1 in 30 result or whatever...which is supposedly a bad result.

We all know what you are talking about. It is a very common WRONG interpretation of the results. There is no false positive. EVER. There are also no negative results. No matter what there is always a chance of either, all the test does is tell what the statistical chances are.

I opted out with my son but will do it this time if my doc doesn't do a dating u/s. I just want to see my baby and it will be my only opportunity to see him/her until the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

That being said, your baby, your body. If you want the NT scan you get no judgements from me.

It's not even common for my OB to order one unless there are specific reasons. I asked for one with my last pg, and he almost acted like he confused why I would want one.

We are only having it done for the u/s and just wanting to see the baby. They didn't even tell me the results last time because I told them I didn't really care. May not be the best reason, but that's why we're doing it.

I should add that I'm sure the only reason they didn't give me the results is because the statistical outcome was indicative of nothing to worry about. I'm sure that if it had been indicating a higher risk they would have informed me. I didn't tell them "don't tell me", I just didn't ask for the results.

I ask the NP at my docs if most people chose to do this and she said yes, b/c insurance covers it and at their office you get another ultrasound. That's the only reason I'm doing it.

I told my hubby no! I didn't need a scan to tell me if something is wrong with my child. I told him today that if it had something wrong such as down syndrom to anencephaly the baby has the right to be born and live or be born and have a proper burial because it may pass soon after birth.

I couldn't live with aborting a baby because it wasn't up to par with SOCIETIES standards. Or because it was easier to not have it...

Fact 96 percent of people who find out a fetus has a possibility of a chromosome disorder or neuro tube defect abort most say they miscarried to people.

A genetic counselor gave a lecture about genetics to my nursing class and told us this astounding fact:

But in the end everyone has the right to choose. It would be nice if I could just get a simple US just to peak at my baby before 20 weeks!

Does your hospital have a fully equipped NICU? If not, that might be reason for you to reconsider. I am with you in that it would not change our decision about the pregnancy if we were to discover our child had health problems, but our hospital does not have a NICU. There are many significant reasons why we love this hospital over others, but if I knew ahead of time I was going to have a baby that required this level of care, I would plan to deliver at a different hospital so that we could avoid the stress of doing an ambulance transfer.
