Question for food allergy moms

We had eggplant parm for dinner, and DS got a rash around his mouth and on his hands within the first few bites. He's eaten it about 4-5 times in the past without issue. The only thing different that I used this time was the tomato sauce. It was a different brand, but there wasn't anything unusual in it. I called the Pedi, and gave him Benadryl. It started looking better pretty quickly.

I'm just wondering if its possible that its the eggplant itself that he was allergic too? He can still have a reaction even though he's had it several times, right? Also, is that something you would try to introduce again sometime in the future, or just avoid it all together. I'll discuss it with his pedi at the next visit, but im just curious what your experience is. Neither DH or I have any food allergies, so I'm unfamiliar with how they're usually handled. Thanks in advance.

  • I don't know a ton about allergies, and I'm not sure where you live, but I wonder if his skin is maybe a little more sensitive with it being winter.

I suppose that's possible. It happened so quickly and was such a dark red rash that I'm thinking it was more of an allergic reaction. I'll have to keep an eye on him in the next few days to see if his skin gets irritated again though.

  • If you compare the ingredients in the sauces, are there any ingredients that stand out on the label of the sauce you used tonight that could be potential allergens?
July 20th, 2012: Never forget the day the fb douchebags tried so hard, but ultimately failed. Viva la October 2011! Yeah, I called you douchebags.

No it's really basic. Tomato pur?e, diced tomatos, garlic, olive oil, onions, salt, sugar, spices. All things he's had countless times. That's what has me thinking it must be the eggplant. Even though he's had that a few times already.

Our lo has gotten a red rash from tomato sauce before. Our pedi said some are more acidic than others and this is how they react right now. She said it was ok, just use a dif brand.

Good to know. Thanks. I definitely won't be buying that brand again.

  • Samuel is allergic to tomatoes, or at least I think so. He does the same thing when he eats tomatoes raw or cooked, he gets what I call a goatee rash, and wherever food has been, even just a small spot he breaks out.
