Momo twins

Hey everyone I'm new to this site. I am 12 weeks pregnant and have been told I am carrying momo twins. I was first told very early, at 9 weeks. I did some research and learned that it can be too early to tell at 9 weeks. I went to the doctor again in two weeks, 11 weeks. She said she still did not see anything seperating the babies. I was recommended to see a perinatologist. I saw him and his assistant and him looked for about an hour and advised us he still didn't see anything. He said they looked great but it was definatly looking as though they were together. I got a phone call back from my OBGYN and she told me that she had recieved my results from the perinatologist and that they could no longer see me. She advised me that I was going to need a much higher level of care than what they could provide me with. She told me she was referring me to the University hospital because they were they only ones that could provide me with the care I was going to need and that the babies would need once they arrived. I am very concerned about when to be admitted. I have done my research and I know that being admitted is the best way to go to try and avoid anything happening to the babies. I also have two older children at home. I have a son thats 8 who is special needs and a 4, going on 14, year old. I know that it is going to be very difficult to leave them and that it will be hard for all of us. I am wondering if any of you have experience with Momo twins. If so, at what point did you decide to go inpatient? Was the decision made because the cords were already tangled? Thank you in advance for any advise that you may have.

Re: Momo twins

  • I have di/di twins personally, but a friend of mine just had her mono/mono girls 2 weeks ago at 28 weeks. She went inpatient at 26 weeks and they took them at 28 because of one baby having heart deaccelerations. Both girls are doing well in the NICU.  She also has a two year old at home and is now home with him and goes to the NICU daily to kangaroo care and drop off her milk. They have have friends watch their 2 year old so her and her DH can go together or even bring the 2 year old with to the hospital and hang out in the family area while they take turns going back to the babies. Good luck! It can be done and don't give up on finding a membrane, I've heard of people not finding it until 20 weeks!

  • It might still be a little early to confirm the membrane. They didn't really see mine until 14 weeks and it wasn't super apparent until 16. I have a thin membrane. So fingers crossed that a membrane shows up!

  • They didn't see our membrane until 16 weeks, I understand the concern and I regretted doing any research but why are they already ruling out a membrane showing up in the near future? I'm happy they are proactive and sounds like you are in good care. GL

  • Our membrane was found at 12w but have seen 16,18,20 weeks on here before. I hope they find it soon. I know how scary that worry was. Good luck!

  • My girls are mono/di.  We saw the membrane just barely at 13 weeks, so there is definitely hope that you'll see something.  But, I do think a higher level of care with identicals only helps.  My OB was clueless about the risks associated with identical twins, so I was happy to have my care transferred to the perinatologist.
  • My good friend had mono/mono twins and she did not have to be admitted at all.  She was put on bedrest at home at about 30 weeks and delivered at 34 after being monitored closely.  One of the twins was taking more of the food supply and one was taking more of the blood supply.  They were both in NICU for a short period of time...under 3 weeks I believe.

  • Ditto PP that it's not too late to find a membrane; my OB didn't even look until 15 wks. At the same time, it's good that you're getting a high level of care, as monochorionic twins need special monitoring regardless. Good luck; I hope all goes well for you and your LOs!

  • Thank you for all of your support. I haven't given up on finding a membrane yet, I just need to prepare should it not be found. It's nice to hear that there are a lot of success stories and ladies that didn't have to go into the hospital. Thank you!
