Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccine

Got mine this morning. I had the flu shot a few months ago. My OBGYN said this is recommend in the third trimester, but that they didn't offer it at the office so I went to a local clinic. Anyone else get it?

Re: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccine

  • I made an appointment with my general practice to get it. Got there waited and then was told they didn't have it, so now I have an rx and an trying to decide if I should just get it done at the pharmacy or pick up the shot and go back to the md.

  • I got it, but had to ask for it. They sent me to my family dr. To get it. The family dr. Said I didn't need it since I've had one in the past ten years, but the OB GYN said it is recommended every 2 for the pertussis.
  • Yep!  Got mine 2 weeks ago.
  • I was given one before I even left the hospital with DS last year.

  • I'm a little confused on this.  My doctor also told me and anyone else who was going to be around the baby when he is first born to get this vaccine.  I called my mom and told her to get it and she said she asked her health care provider about it who told her that she was vaccinated for it when I was born (as was I) and that neither of us needed it.  That was over 24 years ago?  I am going to ask me OB about this again next week, but doesn't that seem like a long time ago?  I feel like we should both still get it again... thoughts?

The pertussis vaccine only lasts 5-10 years.  She should get it again.

  • My MW said that they offer it after labor??? I'm so confused because a lot of people are saying they get it while still pregnant? Anyone else been told they will get it AFTER baby?
  • Yep, I got it about a month or two ago.

It used to be that you get it in the hospital after delivery, but the new CDC rec is that all pregnant women get it while pregnant.

  • I got it in the hospital after delivering DD less than 2 years ago. I don't know if they'll vax me again for it. DH got a it few weeks ago at the local Walgreens when I also made him get the flu shot.

  • I got mine a few weeks ago and I actually was one of the minority of people that have a bad reaction to it.  My arm swelled up and I couldn't lift it or lay on that side and I had nausea and muscle aches for 2 days.  My favorite part?  When I told my doc he said, yea that happens to some women.  Gee, thanks!

I am making my husband, his parents, his sister, my parents and my brother get it since they'll be around the LO the most in the first few months.  I just hope none of them have the same reaction I did because I'll feel bad for being the cause.

  • I will be getting mine in the hospital.  My doctor won't let me get it before I deliver.

  • I had my Tdap in November of 2011, and at my last appointment (last week) my OB said they changed the recommendations and the CDC wants women to get one with every pregnancy, so I got another one- but they did it at my OB's office so it wasn't a big deal.

I've also been told that I'll be getting mine in the hospital after I deliver. But my public health nurse recommended my DH get it beforehand so he got it a few weeks ago...and had some horrible side effects. :( Oh well. I'm glad he's protected! I just hope the same doesn't happen to me because I'll have enough to deal with after giving birth!

I heard this will happen if you get it and have already had it within the past 2 years. Did you have it recently? Its part of the tetanus shot if you stepped on a nail or something and got a shot.

CDC says anyone who will have contact with the baby needs to get it at least 2 weeks prior to any contact, so I don't understand why your MW or anyone's doctor would recommend waiting until you are in the hospital.   Same as the flu vaccine, it takes a couple of weeks for the full immunity to build.  I got mine at 28 weeks, and we are making all of our family members get theirs within the next few weeks.

  • I asked my ob about getting the shot and she said I could get it any time in the third trimester and they would offer it to me after giving birth. After contemplating what to do (and hearing it makes your arm sore) I decided to get it before labor. I figured Baby could get some antibodies built up if I had it before she was born. Also made my husband and both sets of parents get it because whooping cough is making a comeback in this area.
  • I got mine at 31 weeks even though I had one 6 years ago, I wanted to get it while pregnant to give DS some protection.

I very surprised your mom's doctor would tell her she didn't need it because she got it over 24 years ago. TDaP is a shot you should be getting at least every 10 years as it is.  So even if you weren't pregnant you (and your mom) would need to get vaccinated.

Pertussis is very dangerous for infants and it is recommended that anyone in close contact should receive the vaccine (regardless of how recently you last had it.)  Until recently TDaP was given in the hospital after you gave birth, however new research shows that the vaccine can actually penetrate the placenta and provides your baby with protection at birth.  It's not harmful, it's helpful.  Without you receiving the shot during pregnancy your baby won't get their first protection against the illness until they are 2 months old.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is EXTREMELY contagious, in fact, if you get it your doc is required to report it to the CDC and you basically have to quarantine yourself until you're no longer contagious.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions about vaccines, I happen to believe in the importance of them.

  • My husband and I both got the shot a few weeks ago.  Man,  our shoulders were pretty sore for a few days after.   One less thing for us to worry about and to protect our little girl.

my OB had me do it even though I had one last year because it gives baby some protection until she gets all her vaccines. Her dad also got it as will my mom dad. Anyone who could expose her should get it according to my OB

  • No, the last time I had this vaccine was in high school - about 15 years ago - and the only reason I remember now is because I had the same reaction back then with the swelling and pain.  I haven't had any vaccinations in years so I guess I'm just one of the unlucky ones destined to have a negative reaction to this particular one.  I hope this doesn't mean my LO will have the same negative reaction when she gets her shots . . .
