Question on dating from u/s

I know I haven't participated on this board yet. We had a miscarriage in August and I was waiting for good news from an ultrasound before getting too excited.

Today was the ultrasound and now I'm just confused. LMP was December 2. Based on that I was told by the nurse practitioner that I was approximately 9 weeks as of today. Ultrasound showed baby measuring 7 weeks. We did see a heartbeat but the difference in weeks really worried me.

Sorry for the rambling. My question is if I ovulated later than I thought would the 7 week measurement mean 7 weeks from ovulation? 7 weeks from conception? Trying to work out dates in my head and its not adding up.

Re: Question on dating from u/s

  • If baby is measuring 7 weeks from the ultrasound, that means it's been 5 weeks from ovulation/conception. So, you likely ovulated later (2 weeks later). Seeing a heartbeat is great.

  • Measuring 7 weeks would mean that you ovulated 5 weeks ago (assuming a 14 day luteal phase).Good luck!

  • If you weren't tracking ovulation you can't know for sure. Would your BFP line up with your dates? I am just over 7 weeks and got my BFP on January 4th at 8 dpo, just for a ball park of when you may have ovulated. Most importantly, you saw a heartbeat. That is great news and I am sure everything will be fine. Best of luck.

That's what I thought, and why I'm worried. Our BFP was December 28th. It's just not adding up to me. And we don't have our next appointment until the 28th. My brain won't stop spinning.

  • As hard as this sounds, try not to worry about it. Don't let this joy be overshadowed by your previous grief. This is a new pregnancy. Miscarriages are common, but unless your Dr is worried then don't worry. There's a page on here for women pregnant after a loss, perhaps knowing you aren't alone in this exact same worry will help. I miscarried and went on conceive again 6 months later and have a big ol baby girl.
  • With my LMP I would be 9 weeks, if I went by standard measure but I was tracking my ovulation and I know I O'd 2 weeks late so I'm sure I'm only 7 weeks but because I haven't had an U/S yet my doctor is considering me 9 weeks. If I wasn't tracking O I would be surprised to only be 7 weeks but it happens. And like everone else said it means you conceived 5 weeks ago.

  • With my son he constantly measured all over the place and there was never an issue. If no one has told you to be concerned, I wouldn't be. With both of my miscarriages they made sure to tell me it wasn't looking good.

OMG I hate hate hate hate hate how pregnancies are measured...they give everyone an extra two weeks and it's SO dumb! Sorry to be so crazy about this but I feel really strongly about it.

Anyhow, it's 7 weeks from a fake LMP for you, which is to say it's 5 weeks from conception/ovulation.

When did you get your positive pregnancy test? If it was 4 weeks after your LMP then yes, you might be measuring behind. But if it was more like 5-6 weeks after your LMP then you have nothing to worry about because you just ovulated late.

ETA: just saw your post that you got your BFP Dec 28. It is possible to get a positive just after implantation, which is when you're 3 weeks pregnant (1 week after ovulation). So you aren't necessarily 2 weeks behind. But it sounds like you could be measuring a bit behind. If you are concerned see if you can talk to a human about your situation and explain when your BFP was. They still might not get it...I can't tell you how much these people are locked into LMPs and don't get that some women know when they ovulated. But they might want to see you before the 28th if they think you are measuring behind. All of that being said, you did see a hb which is a very good sign. Also, for my first US last time my DS was measuring 4-5 days behind what I knew to be my real EDD based on ovulation and I freaked...but then he was measuring average or big the next time we went in. So their measurements aren't perfect and/or it's ok to be a little behind.
