Traveling advice?

Alright ladies...are you ready for this?

I've never flown in my life.

Dh is going to St.Louis next month for a convention for work. His company has approved me tagging along. We just have to cover my plane ticket. Our dilemma is traveling with Lj. We have three options; go and leave Lj back home for 4 days, take Lj along or dh go alone and we stay home. I'd like to go, but after sitting down and talking it over I feel like flying with Lj will be a little hard. On top of that, what will we do about a carseat when we get to MO? I don't know anything about traveling but I'm sure someone on here has some great advice. Anyone?

  • Leave her at home, and go have a few days away with your husband. That's my vote.

This! However if you do bring LJ you get to check a carseat for free with a lap child under 2. And you can check your stroller for free at the gate. Traveling with LOs is a challenge but not horrible in my opinion. We fly with M about every 23months to see the ILs. It takes a little longer and a little planning but it is doable.

I wouldn't check a car seat.  Never know what kind of crap is happening to it.  There could be as much damage done to it as if it were in a collision.

At any rate, leave LJ.  Get away with the hubs for a few days!! :)

  • DON'T CHECK YOUR CARSEAT!

Just a little tip from someone that had a car seat lost while traveling. We had to have a family member run to Target at 11 pm after traveling for 12 hours with an almost 2 year old. Not fun!

We bought a Go Go Babyz off of eBay and it has made traveling 1000 times easier.

I think you and DH should go just the two of you too. :D

  • My post should have said that we fly ever two to three months not 23 months. Stupid mobile took out my dash.

Anyway, we have a padded bag for the carseat and have never had a problem with it being lost. That is just a risk of checking anything. I think it was Gillie who recently lost regular luggage.

With a GoGoBabyz do you gate check it or buy a seat and use it in the seat?

  • We have flown with Nina and everything was really easy. Depending on the airline you can check car seat, stroller, and pack n play for free. Some airlines charge though. We checked the car seat and it has been fine. My husband wrapped it and put it in a bag.

I say take her with you but I personally don't feel comfortable leaving Nina yet.

Go Go Babyz is a system that straps wheels and a collapsable handle, similar to a stroller, to your convertible car seat. You can then gate check the car seat, or ask at the gate if there are empty seats. You're able to buckle the car seat in the seat without removing the wheel system. L fell asleep in it a few times, we got a free empty seat for him then rolled him down the isle when we exited the plane. Life saver!

  • Okay, I'm trying to process everything! Dh has to have 12 hours of classes in, so he was planning on doing 4 hrs a day. So that leaves me lonely for 4 hrs each day. I'm thinking I want to take Lj because of that. Then again I'm already picturing myself taking a long nap and using the bathroom sans Lj. I know if we left her home she would be well taken care-of but I'm scared Ill get there and want to come right back home. I'm going to look more into flying with her and see how formal our dinners will be each night. I would hate to make everyone at his company uncomfortable by having a little one there.

We were planning on her flying in our laps, what we do in the situation that there wasn't an extra seat? Would it go do under then?

If you'd like to PM me about where you're staying, I could probably offer some things for you & LJ to do instead of sitting in a hotel room.  Public transportation is supposedly pretty easy to navigate downtown.  Temperatures look fairly decent for the next 10 days meaning they will be in the upper 40's, a few lower 50's for the high.

I would not show up with a wig and sunglasses!  I'm just far enough from St. Louis that I probably wouldn't be able to meet up, you know, with the working full-time thing.

Plus, how would I explain meeting an internet buddy to DH?

And 4 hours alone is nothing.  Read, spa, pool, walk to the park, reflect, sleep, eat, brewery tour, stadium tour.

Formal dinners=no kid.  Unless you want me to watch her!

We will be going in March, not positive of the dates yet. I will try to get more info, since dhs company is taking care of everything I have no idea about anything!!  Dh is supposed to call his boss and get his thoughts on Lj going.

My dh would probably say that I'm going to meet up with a man and come up with a horror story about what would happen to me!

  • We have another option; drive 9hrs to St.Louis. We would leave half-way through the night so Lj and I could rest then I could take over driving if h needed me to. I feel like it would be a pita but it kind-of beats the stress of flying. We then would stop in Nashville on the way home and stay the night. Thoughts?

You gate check it, that's when you roll it all the way up to the airplane and there's a person waiting there to take strollers, wheelchairs, and car seats, etc. then, when you get off of the plane at your destination your stroller, wheelchair or car seat will be there waiting. I think that you can gate check small bags too. It's easier than checking it when you check in because you're able to take baby all the way to the Plane.
