So my boys have been sleeping through the night for over 2 months now, but I am not... I have been setting my alarm to pump because 1. so DH can help me with a bottle in the morning and one at night (while I nurse one of the boys- taking turns for the first or last feed of the day is too chaotic for me to deal with) 2. I am TERRIFIED of messing with me good supply. My singleton friends all think I am nuts for getting up to pump when the boys sleep through the night... I know my body would adjust and eventually make less milk so I wouldn't be soooooooo engorged during the night, but I have been giving the boys EBM since they were born and I would be devastated if I messed that up now. Have any of you had to deal with this? If so, how did you approach cutting out the nighttime pump? Did it affect your supply? What do you do for morning/nighttime feedings? I have plenty of milk in my freezer so maybe DH could use up some of that while I nurse the other baby so he could still be involved??? Please let me know what you think...
Re: Pumping at night
I BFed the first year and never pumped at night - sleep was too precious for me! The first few months I pumped after the daytime feedings, to build my supply and to have stored milk for helpers to feed with bottles. I gradually dropped down to pumping twice a day - after the last evening nursing and after the morning nursing. Once my supply adjusted to that, I dropped to only pumping once before I went to bed. That way, I had enough for bedtime bottles so my husband could help do the bedtime feeding.
Check out kellymom.com - it discusses weaning from the pump by either reducing the amount of time you pump at each session or dropping one session at a time. Just take it slowly so you don't get engorged!
