36 weeks - how much more will they gain?

I had my 36 week 1 day growth scan today and my twins were weighing 6 lbs 10 oz and 6 lbs 7 oz.  They are also both head down for the first time.  My doctor won't let me go past 38 weeks.  Can anyone estimate how much more they will gain in the last 2 weeks?  Thanks!

Re: 36 weeks - how much more will they gain?

  • They estimated my boys at around 5.5lbs at 36 weeks....2 weeks later they were born weighing 6-1 and 6-11...but I don't think their estimates are very accurate at that late in the pregnancy!

  • When I was pregnant with my first the ultrasound I had a week before he was born was a pound off he was smaller. I had an ultrasound last week and they said both babies were right around six pounds. I am in the same boat as you with not going past 38 weeks. I think it is pretty hard for them to get really accurate measurements with it being so squished now. I would say both of us will have babies between 6 and 7 lbs at the most. I know I will be very surprised if they are any bigger than that. Good luck to you! :

  • At 36 wks they estimated my girls were 7lbs 5oz and 5lbs 15oz.  They were born 4 weeks later at 6lbs 13 oz and 6lbs 9ozs.  They weights are incredibly inaccurate at the end

  • They estimated that my boys were 6 1/2lbs each via ultrasound the day before induction - they were born at 5lbs 15oz and 5lbs 8oz. While the babies could gain another half pound each before you deliver, the estimates aren't necessarily reliable.

  • Aww, those were my boys' exact birth weights! :)
I think babies are est. to gain about 1/2 lb per week at the end? It's hard to say though. I didn't have a growth scan at 36w but at 35w mine were est. at 5lbs12oz and 5lbs5oz and then at 37w they were est at 5lbs11oz each. (They were born at 37w6d.) So in my case the u/s were a bit lower than reality but you never know; they can be off by up to a pound in either direction.

In theory they will gain 0.5 oz a day...so another half a pound...but like pp said, estimates are often off. Congrats on making it this far and on having such good size babies!

Half oz a day is as newborns (after birth). In utero it's about half a pound (8 oz) per week in late pregnancy.

  • Ditto everyone on the inaccuracy of late growth scans. At 35 wks mine were measuring 5 lbs 12 oz and 4 lbs 7 oz....when they were born later that day they were 6lbs8 and 5lbs3.

  • It really depends on who is doing the u/s and how good the machine is. My first, the doc estimated he would be 6lbs, he was 8lbs 6oz. My second was estimated at 5lbs at 35 weeks and was 7lbs 4oz at 36 weeks when he was born. My third was an awesome doc and asked what I thought he would be. I felt like I was as big as my first so I told him between 8 and 8 1/2 and he was 8lbs 3oz. He said that he thought moms instincts were more accurate than u/s and  he never went by u/s weights. My girl was estimated at almost 8lbs on an u/s and was only 7lbs 3oz. It really does depend on who is doing it, I had different docs and u/s techs each time. I trust the u/s I have been having with the twins a little more because the machines are 100 times better than any machines I have ever had an u/s with, but even then, I am not counting on them by any means.
