Toddlers: 24 Months+

Car Seat question

So my DS is currently in a car seat that has a height limit of 40" and a weight limit of 40 lbs for forward facing.  He is currently 40" but no where near the weight limit.  I still think he is too young (almost 26 months) to be in a booster.  The straps of his car seat are cutting into his shoulders, so I know that he does need a new one, but is the weight limit more important? I know I can find a car seat that will accommodate his height and weight, but I don't really have $100+ to find a new convertible carseat as I already have two, I just didn't realize that my DS would grow so tall in such a short amount of time.  Thank you very much for your help!

Re: Car Seat question

According to that link CO law says your child can't be in a booster seat until 4. (Though I believe that's the law in most places.)

  • Thank you, I really do believe he is too small, but would it be okay if I bought a car seat that had a higher weight limit that he didn't necessarily fit yet, as long as he fit the height requirements? Or should I buy one that fits both his height and weight.  I still plan on the 5 point harness, but if the weight limit isn't such an issue, I will be able to spend less money on the seat.

  • By law they can't be in a booster until they are 4yrs and 40lbs, so your DS is definitely too young. Try looking for a seat a combination seat that will go from 5pt harness to booster. The one we have for DD1 is the Graco Nautilus - the harness can be used up to 65lbs, then it converts to a highback and eventually backless booster. Britax Frontier is another that converts in a similar way.

Thank you, I will definitely look into both of those seats.

  • He's only 2? He definitely still needs to be harnessed. Most kids outgrown carseats by height long before weight. I'd look into the Evenflo Maestro. It's a good, inexpensive 5pt harness seat that can eventually convert to a booster.

  • Thank you all.  Can I go with a carseat that is a 5 point harness but maybe has a higher weight requirement that he can stay in longer? For example, he is currently 30 pounds, but the car seat I'm looking at is a 5 point harness that has a height requirement of 57" but has a minimum weight limit of 40 pounds.  It goes to 100 pounds though, so I know it would fit him well past when he's tall enough for a booster, but he's still got awhile before he will fit the minimum weight requirement.

What seat are you looking at? I think you must mean a height limit of 57." I'm confused on what you're saying about weights. Is the actual min weight 40 lbs or is that the min for booster mode only?

  • Look at a graco nautilus, Britax frontier... Yes, they are over the 100 budget, but they have higher height and weight limits as harnessed FFing seats and then convert to high back and backless boosters... So it would be the last seat. Maybe consign or sell your used convertible seats to cover the cost.
A cheaper option is the Evenflo Maestro which would fit LO as a harnessed FFing seat until 50inches, and seat belt booster until 54inches. It's got great reviews and will cost under 80

To clarify what I think you were asking a harnessed booster or sometimes called combination booster is the same thing as a front facing seat, usually requiring your child to be age 2, over 20lbs, etc. depending on the specific seat. and a certain height
