wooden tables and messy eaters

Preface: I know that the easiest answer to my question is that I should go get a plastic place mat, but I'm afraid to set foot into Target for fear of the million other things that would inevitably jump into my cart. I'll do that eventually.

If your LO eats at the table, what do you use to clean the wood? Just water? I used to use Pledge on it, but that makes me nervous since he ends up eating food off it. I basically have to clean it after every meal, especially if he has yogurt and rubs his sticky yogurt fingers all over it. I'm just not sure if the water is getting everything off, or if the Pledge wipes are really that toxic.

At our old house, I used the tray with the Space Saver High Chair, so it wasn't an issue. Now I have him eating at the table.

  • What type of finish does the table have? We use a soapy sponge or amonia when it is too disgusting. They make an organic, kid and pet safe version of amonia. They sell it at Walmart and it has cows on the front and I think the word "moo" in the product name.

I really don't know - it's not fine furniture by any means. DH had it before we got married, and his purchases are usually budget-friendly. It could probably handle soap without messing up the finish.

  • I just use dish soap.  We mostly use the tray, but occasionally he eats at the table.  I do have a 3 year old though, and that means mess!!  I have to clean after every meal.  I still have a shiny finish on my wood table, and it's 12 years old.

  • We use method brand all purpose cleaner then I wipe it with plain water once it's clean.

I've used dish soap too and it works well!

  • If it isn't too terribly bad I just use hot water. Weekly I'll go around and clean with furniture polish then I'll re-wipe the table with warm water. Lj is pretty good about keeping her food on her plate though.

  • I have a sponge designated for cleaning surfaces and I just use that sponge, just dampened with water and a hint of dish soap - not enough to make the surface of the table slick or sudsy.  After the sponge wipedown I just dry with a clean cloth.

  • Honestly, I just use a damp rag after every meal.
